Installed New Bed Wood

I bought a set of driver-quality oak from bad69bowtie a few weeks ago ( http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=184886 ) and finally got it installed. My bed needs a little paint, but at least it is functional now.

When I typed out the title, I knew the wood comment was inevitable.

Re: Installed New Bed Wood

What did you put on your wood (not morning wood by the way) to protect it?

I used Thompson's Water Seal. It's not the best, but it works ok. It has to be reapplied on a regular basis.

Mar-K Products has been doing a bunch of testing of different wood treatments.

Why is that considered 'driver quality" I cant see a damn thing wrong with it.

Looks great to me. I wish my bed was half as nice as that.

Re: Installed New Bed Wood

Also, did the bed come with all holes drilled? Is there a way to install the bed wood without the eight or so large bolts?

That's what I though when it arrived at my house. I suppose if you were spending $30,000 on a rebuild, you might want boards with more closely matched color. I'm extremely pleased with the quality of the wood. It makes the rest of the truck look bad.

None of the holes were drilled. I just put the wood in position and traced the hole locations with a pencil. I didn't bother putting off-center countersinks in for the eight main bed mounting bolts. I'll worry about that later.

I suppose it would be possible to put the eight bed mounting bolts in first before the wood goes in if you put some clearance counterbores on the underside of the boards. You might compromise a little in strength if you do that, but for a show truck it probably wouldn't matter. Mar-K sells aluminum strips where the bolts attach to the bottom so you can't see any bolt heads in the strips.
