Stronger SBC motor mounts ???

When we put the engine back in the 70, Is there a stronger mount than just the rubber biscut thing ?? I have seen plenty of them in two pieces, and if you get on the gas the fan jumps up and breaks the shroud. This is expensive and unsafe also. Didn't GM make an interlocking type because they were so unsafe or was that just for the cars ??? If I could find a better one for just the left side that would be OK. Guess I could run a bolt and washer clear through ???

Re: Stronger SBC motor mounts ???

i'm using 73-87 small block mounts. there's a faq on this site about them, it makes engine swaps easy with just 1 bolt to pull on each side, and they're bigger and stronger, and they bolt right in! however if you have 67-72 power steering, you would need a way to bolt on your pump without using the engine mount for the bracket.

You can easily adapt the later style 73 and up style mounts. Although still rubber, the hold up WAY better that this era's mounts do. I have seen folks use solid mounts on drag cars, but that is a LOT of pressure on the frame structure. I think you need the flex in there. I don't know if they have them for our year mounts, but I have seem some poly mounts for the later style.

Performance Online sells engine stands that accept the newer style engine mounts.

You can also get poly mounts, and add a chain if you have that much tourque to the left side of the motor cyclinder head to the frame, dont crank it down just leave it so that there is just barely any tension on it.

Re: Stronger SBC motor mounts ???

I'm not sure, but I think Energy Suspension makes poly mounts for the 67-72 2wds but not the SBC 4x4s. I know they don't for '71 SBC 4x4s because I researched that one and even asked a local accessories shop that sell ES stuff. No such polymal.

Re: Stronger SBC motor mounts ???

The single bolt style that fits the 4x4 is available through Brothers in poly. They call them big block mounts. Bolt right in on a 72 SB 4x4, I would think that the 71 has the same mounts. Check with the other venders first though. A few of them sell Brothers parts and you will get them for less $$$.

Here they are http://www.brothersonlinestore.com/p...number=BBMM2UR

Re: Stronger SBC motor mounts ???

I looked into this just a few weeks back and came up with urethane mounts with a built in safety. So even if they fail, the motor will not come away from the tower. Prothane is the name of the co. I got mine through a place called Suspension Resoration.

back in the day gm actually had a retrofit for a torque strap to limit engine movement// i've always used 3/8 stainless cable with a turnbuckle to prevent torque twist

I cant even think of how many times I have done this as well, cables, chains, turn buckles anything back then because motor mounts where nortoriuos (think I spelled that right) for breaking..
