why is this tailgate special?

i've never seen a tailgate like this. it's from a 72 1/2 ton. the embossed section is larger than most 67-72s, almost like a 73-87.

Re: why is this tailgate special?

I think that this is a 73 to 80 tailgate. They will interchange to 67 to 72's. My neighbor has a '69 tailgate on his '75 pickup.

Don't believe everything you see on Ebay auctions. Sometimes the owner's don't know what they have, and sometimes they are trying to pull one over on naive bidders.

Re: why is this tailgate special?

i knew it was a 73-77, i've spent time sanding both my 72 and 77's so i was mixing the characteristics into one because i'm tired. that and the auctioneer did lie and say 72

Re: why is this tailgate special?

Assuming that the trim is original it's a 73-76 or 78- 80 tailgate. It is not a 77 or the trim insert would be yellow. I would have to look at my brochures to verify the exact year. The letters in "Chevrolet" changed at some point, but I am to tired to look it up now....

i don't know what was original on my 77, i would say the cab and leave it at that, but the tailgate had the Chevrolet on the right side instead of centered like the one above. i don't see many centered ones, but i have on 73's and 74's and i havent seen a 81-87 around here without the silver trim covering the trench.

Your going to make me go look at my brochures aren't you. I think you are correct that the lettering is 73,74 and maybe 75,76. 77 was a transition year for lots of changes and that was one of them. 81-87 was when the front end changed and they went to wide trim.

Re: why is this tailgate special?

well that's where i end up thinking this was a tailgate off another year (this previous owner was a real cheapo) it had the metal band above the trench although it was painted black and torn up. and underneath that the letters were on the right side. it was more than likely a late model tailgate, i wish i had pics but we parted it out real quick.

Re: why is this tailgate special?

that's also the same bed i had on the 77, with square gas doors. 2 of the bed bolts had been pushed through the bed and glued in because they didn't line up with the frame.
