84 IROC TPI V8 - good engine?

I have a lead on a SWB C10 with an 84 IROC TPI V8 and 700R trans.

Are these good engines and fuel systems?

The TPI is a good setup but the 1st year for them was 85.

Re: 84 IROC TPI V8 - good engine?

The seller must be confused on the year. It's definitely not carbed.

Did camaro go from carburators in 84 to TPI in 85 or was there some TBI's in between?

Thanks

That is correct. The V-8 Camaro was carbed in 84 and the highest trim level was a Z-28. In 85 they had a tuned port 305 and the IROC was introduced.

There were some TBI Camaros in the mix also.
I don't know when they started or ended with the TBI but I know there were some up until the early 90's, at least.

The 85 TPI system was a unique computer system too. Not very desirable I guess.

Then there's the Mass Air Flow systems and the Speed Density systems.
MAF = 85-89
SD = 90-92

Re: 84 IROC TPI V8 - good engine?

85 was the first year for TPI Camaros. The TBI started in 87 on the base models, but crossfire (two TBI units) was in 82-84 Z28s as an option. 85 had it's own computer (also in 84 Vettes) and 86-89 were MAF, 90-92 were MAP/speed density. So it may be an 84 TPI from a Vette.

Re: 84 IROC TPI V8 - good engine?

Well here it is. I had no luck finding a SWB so I put a wanted ad up. I got one bite and picked it up yesterday.

I'll be fixing the ugly stuff this summer.

[EDIT] I deleted some pics, including the one of the uglyside. My Geocities usage was being exceded and some of you were getting the Red X.

Re: 84 IROC TPI V8 - good engine?

Am I mistaken or did the centerbolt head motor come out in '88 when they also changed to a one piece rear seal? The '84 Vette was a Crossfire motor, not TPI either.

Do you mean center bolt valve covers? If so, I believe the first year was '87.

Hopefully, That'll all be fixed this summer.

So you guys are saying that this is probably at least an 87 or later engine?

87 or later heads. Doesn't necessarily mean the engine is, you will have to decode it.

Ok, I may be wrong but I''m pretty sure Crossfire was 82-83 only. We have an 84 H.O. Z-28 that my wife bought new, and I don't remember that being an option.

Re: 84 IROC TPI V8 - good engine?

Are there any headers that will fit my application?

Re: 84 IROC TPI V8 - good engine?

Any normal SBC headers for a 67-72 truck will work. You will need to keep an O2 sensor bung though. You can buy the bung seperately and weld it into the new headers if you need to.
