Another Sob Story

Anyone know of someone in the Portland, OR area that does body and paint. I am new to it and took a college course for it and spent a lot of time piecing my Blazer back together purchased new doors, fenders and qtr patch panels. I got everything blocked and primered, the doors still need some work and some aligning. Problem is I was taking it to a friend of a friend that does paint (very good work too) expecting 2K-3K because I have already purchased the paint and clear coat. Well on the way there the tranny seal leaked, and driving on the freeway, sprayed all over the truck. The guy told me he would have to take it all back down and start over. He said he would do it for $4500 this to me sounds like a pretty good deal as I have had estimates before I did anything to the truck for around 7K-8K. I just don't have that kind of cash flow and I really want to drive my Blazer this summer. So any thoughts, suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks guys!

Re: Another Sob Story

Do a test area.
Can't believe you'd have to take down the entire truck but it's possible.

Clean it, spray it and you'll find if it fish eye's out pretty quick.
What did you use for primer?

What's to loose?

Sounds like a high price from here, dunno.
Especially if your supplying the materials, that's a fair chunk of the overall cost. JMO.

Re: Another Sob Story

At least you can see that oil.It should be able to be cleaned off.It sounds like he was going to be pretty high anyway. How long does it take to D/A and prime? He would have done some of that either way.

Re: Another Sob Story

They had to take most of my truck down to metal and do some repairs. My paint job cost about 4k. Spraying is the easy part. Its the body work that takes all the time.

Re: Another Sob Story

I wanted to do it all myself but I think I have reached my limits of skill I have worked on the doors and I can't seem to get them lined up and they do need some body work too. has anyone installed the aftermarket doors if so was there anything special you had to do to get them lined up? I was thinking I may have the door hinge holes reemed out by a machine shop to give me more adjustment ability. I also spent 1K on paint and I no longer have the paint booth available unless I take the class again @ $300, so I want to make sure it's done right the first time. Last time I attemped paint it turned out pretty nice (check avitar) but it started flaking off after a couple years.

Sand it down and spray it yourself, Nothing like having complete control over the whole process. judging by your avatar you've got skills.

Thanks for the Props Ian, maybe I'll take a couple weeks off this spring and just concentrate on finishing this project. Still need some advice on the doors though.

Keep'em comming!

Re: Another Sob Story

Sounds high if you have done all of the work. Make SURE you get in writing what you are getting for 4500.00. Such as will there be any orange peel left and so on and so forth. You do not have to take it all the way back down. Just use a good cleaner and scrub the Blazer down REAL GOOD!!! Good luck.

Also might try PM'ing a Moderator, and asking them to move this to the paint and body forum. There are some guys in there that do this for a living, and can give EXPERT advice on these types of issues.

Re: Another Sob Story

I would wipe the truck down with some wax and grease remover. Wash with soap and water and then use the wax and grease remover again. There is no need to strip it back down to the metal. Where are the doors not fitting at? The best way to line a door up is to fit it to your cab first. Then fit the fender to the door.

Re: Another Sob Story

I'll get some more pics this weekend but I had the doors off when trying to line them up there just wasn't enough play in the hinges to get the doors where I needed them.

Re: Another Sob Story

Teamradrz1, I recently aligned my doors on my truck and could offer to help if you still need it. I'm no expert by any means, but my buddy and I got my doors aligned pretty well I think.

Btw, I got your MS messenger post, but didn't know who it was until just now. Let's talk.

Well I paid $1000 for my paint and clear with my school discount, woulda been like $1400 without it. I don't wanna shell out an obscene amount, I have an offer for $4500 but that seems a lil steep I was hoping more like $3000 to block it, lil more body work and shoot it. Maybe I'm out of line with my thinking that is why I posted this on the boards, so you guys that know can let me know what I should pay. But make no mistake I want a quality job that is done right.

Re: Another Sob Story

Thank you, I have not tried doing it with the strikers off. That could really be the problem.
