I am open to all options but until my 800 Sq/ft garagmahall is completed in 3 weeks, I have to do this in the stone driveway.

remove seat, remove dust boot, remove floor matt or carpet, unbolt tranny hump and remove, remove the shifter(push down on the cover at the base of the shifter and rotate, shifter can be removed once this pops out), unbolt tranny from bell housing, unplug any wires, remove driveshaft, wiggle it back and drop away.

Re: What is the best way to remove a 4 speed manual transmission?

I cannot move the trans back far enough to allow it to drop! The bell hits the cab and the bottom does not clear the X/member.

On some vehicles it's considerablt easier to remove the engine/trans as a unit that it is to remove the trans alone. Especially if you have no lift or trans jack.

BTW John, far left side of the keyboard, 3rd row from the bottom, key says "Caps Lock", try it out! LOL

harlyworkr, Those stone driveways hurt!
I'm assuming this is a truck style 4 speed so they are heavy.
Do you have any help?

Pull the driveshaft, speedometer, cable, 4 bolts that attach the trans to the bellhousing.
Put a jack under the engine oil pan with block of wood or something to spread the load and remove the crossmember, (if your truck has one, some have the rear mounts on the bellhousing itself).
Then if you're working alone, without a trans jack it's easier and safer to work from the top if you can.
Jerk the seat, carpet, and bolt in trans hump out, (hopefully you have the bolt in style) and use the shifter to lower the trans to the ground.

If you don't have the bolt in trans hump you'll probably have to work from under the truck. "Aquire" a trans jack. Borrow, beg, rent, steal, whatever...!Hahaha

Unbolt the trans from the bellhousing. Should clear fine then.

Re: What is the best way to remove a 4 speed manual transmission?

Trans from bell? 2 bolts inside, and 2 bolts outside? how do i acomplish that trick, there is no room as the trans only goes back at the most 4 inches b4 it hits the cab.

It's been a long time since I worked on one of those kind of bellhousings. Those 4 bolts are the ones you need to remove but I can't remember how to get to the 2 bottom ones that go through from the inside.
Thinkin.....

It seems that everyone is missing the point that you can remove the cross member allowing the rear of the tranny to drop and slide back.

Re: What is the best way to remove a 4 speed manual transmission?

The two bolts inside the bell housing can be removed with an end wrench. I used an engine hoist to raise and lower the tranny. It was a lot easier than using a jack by myself. If you remove the trans tunnel you should have plenty of room to move the trans back to clear the bell housing.

Re: What is the best way to remove a 4 speed manual transmission?

Interesting facts about this POS... 4 core radiator, forward engine mounts mangled to fit a 6cyl, I ran the numbers and it came back as a V8. The trans X-member is riveted to the frame and not easily removable. I am looking for a grinder now.

Transmission removed, cleaned, and mounted to its new powerplant. I need just a few more items and I will be ready to drop it into the 69.Name: 02-26-06_1436.jpg

Re: What is the best way to remove a 4 speed manual transmission?

I know that truck wasn't from KC. I lived there for 5 years. Too much salt up there. Rust would've taken that truck down. Show some pic's of the parts truck the tranny came from.

these trucks don't have a rear x-member to remove and the front one in rivited in.remove the 4 bolts that hold the tranny to the bell housing,it will come out.
