Hello everyone, I am new here, I post on fullsizechevy and streetsourcemag.com alot. My name is Joe, I am from baltimore, Md. I own a 79 chevy p/u that my father and I are currently restoring. I am in the early stages of a frame off build. I have a KP 6 link kit for the rear, and a chopped 1.5" front crossmember which I just finished up yesterday. I coated the whole frame and suspension with POR-15. Gonna start with the front suspension build up tomorrow, Here are some pics, I look forward to hearing from everyone!

That is a sweet stepside you got there, my nextdoor neighbor has a stepside longbed. I think its a 80'.

Cool project.

If it's not too much trouble the next time you're out wrenching on it, what's the dimensions on the 'dog-leg' that connects the back of the front 4-link w/the rear canti-lever bar (specifically, what's the width of the bushing ends, O.D. of the bar tubing, length of the bar)?

Keep the pics coming & next time get some of the body too.

Looks like you're going to super notch it. (BTW, are you planning on welding the notch on the rear crossmember between the front 4-link mounts?)

hey everyone, I ll get you some dimensions of the dogbone tomorrow. I plan on dropping in a pretty built 350 with a high stall and some 4.11's my dad is pretty smart when it comes to engines, so im sure he will look out for me!

as for the body to my truck, its on pallets hidden in a corner

the cab is done in primer, has a few things shaved, and the bed is untouched so far, I plan on fully shaving it, molding in the rear, and maybe putting in some LED's.

the truck you see in the background is a 37 dodge pickup, belongs to my friend. he is planning on restoring it soon.

oh yea, and about that crossmember i had to notch...I cant decide if i wanna just leave it bolt in, or weld it in...what do u think i should do?

anyone know of a place that sells some notches for the rear of our trucks? i need one thats around 10" for the axles.

DO NOT!!! Weld that X member in reinstall it using the original bolts.

Your not suppose to weld on a frame period.

But everyone dose it anyways! and that dosen't make it right.

The reason you should NEVER weld a frame is because it will destroy the temper of the frame any heating of it will alter the molecular structure of the metal and weaken it in that spot and then it will be prone to cracking.

The frame is tempered so that it will flex ALOT! without cracking.

Also by welding the X member in you will make the whole front of the truck so ridgid that the torque of the engine will probably cause cracking and then you would not be able to replace it because you can't unbolt welds.

The engineeres @ GM know what there doing and if they thought that X member needed to be welded in than it would of came that way from them

87 is correct on that one. No flex equals cracks.

There may be some confusion here. The crossmember referred to here is not the front crossmember, but the crossmember between the front hangers of the rear suspension. I suppose Draggin had to notch it, so the drive shaft would clear. In do so, he used some fasteners to attach the notch to the crossmember. I would think he would be better off welding the notch to the crossmember.

Yea, we are talking about the rear notch, in front of the 4 link, It had to be notched to clear the driveshaft, it came in the KP components kit as bolt in, but I think i might weld it in. thanks for the link for the C notches. gonna order em tonight.

I still say leave it bolt-in. If you fabricate your own c-member I could see welding it in but since your just notching a factory structure, I would bolt it back in or leave it riveted if it hasn't been removed.

Don't forget those measurements
