Besides the obvious what is a "factory" flatbed? Was it a dealer option or what? There is a guy selling one and I had never heard of this "option".

Never heard of it as a factory option. More likely a dealer installed option.

Yes, but the only dealer sales literature I've seen on factory flatbeds or stake beds indicated they were on a 1 ton 2wd duallie chassis, not on a single wheel 4x4 chassis

I was always under the impression that it was done after production, sold through GM dealers, like the extended cabs were, or flat beds are sold today. Build a cab/chassis, then farm it out for a flat bed or a box, then sell it at the chevy dealer.

I agree with Longhorn Man. When have you seen factory flat beds today? Sure you see new flat beds on the dealer lot but they are cab and chasis trucks with the flat bed added to them or bed taken off. Just like the literature explains. Back in the 20's the 30s you could get a truck with just the front clip and a seat. No real cab other than the firewall!!! People added on what they wanted to from there.

the cowl/chassis was avalible in 67 & 68 too. Odd ball looking trucks. They made a lot of school busses out of cowl/chassis trucks in the 60 - 66 model truck chassis.

I have heard old-timers refer to professionally produced beds as "factory flatbeds", which I assumed to mean it was built in someones factory instead of someones backyard?

One guess as to which kind this one is:

My 68 cab and chassis had a different id number than a pickup , and a few other differences as well . Check that the id number doesn't belong to a pickup.

I just looked it up, there was indeed a stake bed offered...from the factory.
3/4 and one ton...2 wheel drive only... the model number would end in 09.
If the model number ends in 03, then it was sold as a cab/chassis and the bed was added.

I think Castiron9`s is a factory bed.They were available from GM.The had ribbed steel edges(like a`72 step bumper)and rounded corners.The side marker light were the standard pickup type mounted in a steel box designed specifically for this application.The tail lights and back-ups were the same as a Stepside.These lenses were also found on StepVans.
That one at the top is not factory.In fact,it looks fabricated too me,nice job.It`s not an Omaha Standard or Obeco or Reading.

Hey good to see those pics and good info too. I'm going out on a limb here to agree with Special-K and say that is not a factory flatbed on that '67 3/4 ton- it doesn't have the ribbed sides and its a 4x4.

When I spoke to the owner the only proof of its "factoriness" was the word of the previous owner. It would be interesting to check the model number and see if it was an original cab/chassis truck.

Nonetheless this thread dredged up some more great photos of trucks to drool over. So thanks for that!
