fuel injected MPG?

just wondering what is considered good mpg for an 87, 1/2ton, longbed, 2wd, 305, 700r4...

wifes 87 GMC is getting between 16-17 consistantly, worst was 15.. this is all city driving.. i feel this is pretty decent as the 92 maxima she had was only rated at 19mpg city and i know it was getting less than that..

Re: fuel injected MPG?

16 - 17 in town sounds right on the button

Most of the time you arn't in OD in town, so it acts like a regular three speed, unless your 700r4 locks up in third.

Re: fuel injected MPG?

at what speed is OD suppose to kick in? On the roads between town and home the speed limit is 45.. and hilly.. the hills would bog down the OD and it would have to kick into 3rd. I keep it in Drive now, so it doesnt bog down.. still gets 16-17mpg.

Re: fuel injected MPG?

It shouldn't be in lockup below 45 mph, and even then, thats a bit too early with some of the earlier TBI engines. Chances are it isn't kicking back out of OD, but rather, its just unlocking the torque converter. I typically do the same as you though, take it into drive if it is constantly locking and unlocking on me.

Re: fuel injected MPG?

My '87 gets around 16-18 in what I consider city driving. When I drove to Orlando last year when I had it for only about a month it got 22mpg.
