Speedo or cable issue?

I've been trying to get the speedo cable in my truck working again for sometime. I had to do some wiring behind the bezel awhile back and when I reattached the cable and drove it it made a awful whinning sound. I think it's getting in a bind because my speedo (Autometer) is making me look like I'm driving 130 while doing 40. I've moved the cable many times. I'm stumped on this one and wondering if the gearing in the speedo is messed up? I've even tried spaying white lithium in the cable from the speedo inlet down with no luck still. Somethings not right and about to pull my hair out. I can't see how much MPG I'm getting and it's driving me nuts.

Re: Speedo or cable issue?

Pull the whole cable, and then you should be able to get the inner cable out of the sleeve. Wipe it all down, and lube it up, I like to use graphite, because it won't dry out. Install it again, and it should work OK.

Re: Speedo or cable issue?

Brandon, i am still having issues with my cable or speedo

I put in new gears and cable, and it still bounces, saying 60-70mph when I am at 45+/-.

I am wondering if its the actual spedo on both of ours ???

Actually mine is more than that. It's whining up to 140 MPH when I'm doing like 40 MPH. It was doing like yours before. I'm still wondering about the speedo like you mentioned.

Re: Speedo or cable issue?

Like 71swb said, you'll have to pull the cable from the outer sheathing to lube it thoroughly. I tried dry graphite and did not have much luck. So, I tried to replace my cables (two-piece). I couldn't find the right cable lengths, so I ended up trying a few that I got from the parts store. In the end, I just replaced the upper piece.

Also, before you remove the cable from gauge, get under truck and disconnect cable from the trans. Try turning the cable with your fingers. It should turn freely and not bind. If it does, it may be binding at one of the connection points.
