bad noises

I was working on my 87 V20 this weekend (Th400, 203xfer, 1987 350TBI), when I discovered some horrible noises coming from the transmission (I think). It raps like something is making contact, but it is not dependent on engine speed. Shifting from park to neutral, or drive, etc. makes it improve or disappear temporarily. I did fill the tranny fluid recently (since transplanting the engine), and checked all fluids, look okay. I don't actually drive it anywhere (yet) but driving it up the road in my neighborhood was interesting. Shouldn't there be a vacuum hose to the modulator on the tranny? Where does that go on the engine? The donor vehicle was a standard. I know it's impossible to tell these things without being there, but if you guys have any ideas, I am at a loss here. I hope I didn't screw up installing the tranny/torque converter. I just got finished cutting the springs off my new frame, which I am hoping to start on next weekend. Thanks guys!!
