Re: Loud muffler
I have stainless steel dual catco's with 3 inch tipes. My neighbors hate it called cops b/c its so loud. Cops said hes a teen hes doing nothing ilegal and now that neighbor hates me.
I love the sound its loud and its nice tone. The only time i dont car for it is when i am on a highway that is 45 to 50.

Re: Loud muffler
40 series are nice. That is what I had on my 82, but I doubt that this is what he is looking for.
On my 69 Cutlass I have true dual exhaust. From the headers it is 3" pipe into a 3" inlet and 3" outlet glasspack. (Not sure of the brand, but they were about 70 bucks a piece) and then it necks down to 2.5" to go around the axle and then out the back. The mufflers are placed right before the axle. HOLY COW does that thing beller. It isn't too rough when you are just driving, but you punch it to the floor and it will set car alarms off for about a 1/2 block. And they snap instead of a rumble.

Re: Loud muffler
loud is exactly what i want, i never thought of just saying i want something that sounds off car alarms and attracts cops. something good and loud, not just a pair of cherry bombs from the local parts store

Re: Loud muffler
if you want loud exhaust, you should go with straightpipes. i have full length headers with true duals w/ homemade echo tips made out of a driveshaft and hollowed out glasspacks. its not that loud until you get on it and when you putzing around town at 25-35, its nothing major, but put the hammer down and she'll impress ya.
BTW i have flowtech afterburner headers

Re: Loud muffler
Try a straight thru muffler like a Thrush (looks like the older style Cherry Bombs) no baffles in it but just a few bumps to break up the airflow. Also add some longer tips on the ends to allow it to get a somewhat throaty sound. A couple of long, 4" diameter tips will definately add to the change of the sound.

Re: Loud muffler
Straight pipes have a "hiss" sound to them, besides, they're not legal. If you want the loudest legal, then go with Dynomax Bullets. Fromt he outside they look like glasspacks, but these babies aren't packed with anything.
2.5 in and 2.5 out on a glasspack would be an 18 inch long glasspack, but the bullets do 2.5 in and 2.5 out in 12 inches. It is pretty much smooth on the inside with nothing to break up the flow, just some holes drilled into the inner pipe to let the "hiss" of straight pipes go away. Technically, (in texas) they are not street legal, but they pass the D.O.T. These are the mufflers used by people that race cars in classes that require mufflers. Again, they "look" legal. I've gotten pulled over many times in my 72 because of how loud my truck sounds. But looking under the truck, they just assume that it's burnt out glass packs. Oh, and that was on part throttle. I can set off every car alarm in my work's parking lot at 1/2 throttle. I can guarantee an open spot on the highway at WOT, because people won't want to be near you when you're that loud. *evil laugh* Toad

Re: Loud muffler
How about a different approach. Instead of being just a "Dude with loud pipes", try the approach of a good exhaust system that has Flowmasters and then install the dumps that QTP "Quick Time Performance" sells. That way you can have the best of both worlds. Sooner or later you will be running down a city street and Johnny Law will come up behind you and happily introduce you to his kind of justice. That will cost you for the fun. With the electronic dumps you can open them for performance and sound, then when you would like to hear that dang stereo, you can close them for a quieter ride. See www.quicktimeperformance.com

Re: Loud muffler
I have a different idea for you! You could try a set of cable pull dumps. This way it is only loud when YOU want it to be. It is great for annoying neighbors! and if they are rude enough to call cops the truck is quiet when they arrive! This also has the advantage of relieving all back pressure from exaust. (although some engines don't like that) The last advantage I can think of is the cable pull will let you tune the amount of noise you get. Just remember the dump would have to come after the o2 sensor.

Re: Loud muffler
If you want something loud, my buddy has stock intake manifolds, true dual 2 1/2 inch all the way back to 2 12" glass packs, out the back with some 7" dia. x 15" long tips. At 1/2 throttle he can rattle windows a block away going through downtown, and wide open throttle sounds like a open header drag car.

Re: Loud muffler
For an added touch; get some piano wire (higher notes) and stretch the wire in an "X" design across those tips. Make it so that the wires will rub on each other, and make it tight in the holes. Not only will you rattle those windows, but you can break them also---especially in a tight street area.

Re: Loud muffler
I haven't tried it in a long time, but my Dad turned me on to this. He had them stretched across the fishtail tips on his old Harley and sitting in the street outside a business, he cracked the glass front window. If you work at it, you can come up with a unique tone in your exhaust.
