which carburetor is best????

O.K. so I think I've decided to buy a new carb for my truck the problem is I'm not sure which one to go with, Edelbrock or Holly. I have a Quadrojet right now and am having problems with it. I thought about rebuilding it but I'm not sure I want to spend the time on it. Which carb do you guys like and why. My engine is basically stock for right now I do however plan on adding a cam before long to give me a little more power. I do have an edelbrock 2101 intake and am adding headers and dual exhaust this weekend (Thanks TJ) so I'm looking at a 600cfm. Thanks in advance for the input.

Re: which carburetor is best????

Edelbrock, modern version of Q-jet. You can tune and get great milage & response. Holleys orginally designed as racing carbs. Never could get milage out of them, gave up & went back to Q-jets. Guys running factory carbs in N.H.R.A. Stock Eliminator classes are going hi 10s. Whats wrong with yours?

I'm not sure, It seems to be causing a skip or miss, when I step down on it it pops then sometimes it does fine

Re: which carburetor is best????

Depends on what you're wanting your truck to do. Decent performance and great driveability= Edelbrock. Great performance and decent driveability= Holley.

I used to run only Holleys, till I got my first Edelbrock. I've never been interested in another Holley after seeing the light.

I have a Holley and may have a mild cam in it. I get about 13mpg with an OD tranny. Not very fuel friendly at all.

Re: which carburetor is best????

Anyone tried the Holley Street Avenger Carbs.? A guy I work with just put one on a mid-level 350 and it works great. He can change the secondary spring to adjust when they open. He said w/the mileage spring he gets about 16 on the hwy, and with the aggressive spring he doesn't get to pass many stations, but the truck runs like a banshee. And he can change the spring in about 5 minutes.

He did have one small tuning issue. He used the 670cfm and had to buy the accellerator pump cam kit. Rolling into the trhottle on the hwy it would hesitate, but one step up on the pump cam fixed it right away. He used to run nothing but Edelbrock stuff and loves his new holley. He really liked the price too. We found one on Ebay that was NEW in box for $285 shipped. Even came with a pressure guage and dual fuel line kit. I know when I get a few other bugs worked out, I'll be buying one.

Just an observation I thought I'd relate.

Re: which carburetor is best????

I've had three holleys(can say good and bad things about them)
The old timer I get advice from says use holley for racing and tuning, use edel for driving.
I am just into long cruises now so I bought a edelbrock 4106 for this summer....
can't wait to see the light........

I have the 670 Street Avenger. Bought it slighty used off Ebay. Put it on, turned the mix screws out 1 1/2 each side, adjusted idle, checked float level, pulled out and smoked tires down street.

Re: which carburetor is best????

i would run a holley. it will require more tuning in the first place but once its tuned in it will run better than any edelbrock.if the carb is properly tuned for the engine the mileage will be just fine.the street avenger carbs are great. the last 40 or 50 years of holley experience tied into it. the demons are a holley knock off with a billet main body and fuel bowls still the same basic design.

Sounds like the throttle shaft is worn ( common problem), it will suck air at odd times and lean the mixture( pops), the accelerator pump may be worn and slightly out of time (skip). Tuning these carbs is from mild to wild. I just mess with jets. You can change secondary rods, hangers, vacuum break. It depends want you want from the carb. I'm sure someone in your area is doing carbs for the N.H.R.A. Stocker guys if you want a bad a$$ carb.

Would an edelbrock 1400 have a higher fuel economy than a stock 2bb?

Re: which carburetor is best????

Well the HOLLEY AVENGER SERIES is a good carb, but I bought a Barry Grant several months ago and I will never buy another holley after buying the demon. Easy to tune and better performance. I does cost abit more but I think its worth it!

I have a Speed Demon It's AWESOME
They are Easy to tune and better performance. I does cost a bit more but It is worth it.

I have a Edelbrock 1406 on my 84 and it's is the worst carb I have ever bought. Burning my money would have been more fum.

My dad also has one on his 385 stroker and it gets crused at daily.

Re: which carburetor is best????

I bought my vette in Miami and drove it home via Charleston SC. it has a 750 holley double pumper on a stock 350 l-48 vette engine and I got 18 MPG through four or five tanks of gas plus it ran pretty strong too. I think I would go with the Edelbrock though if I was buying a new one.

I'd just have the quadrajet rebuilt. In my opinion, it's as good as the Edelbrock.
