Why? I am not trying to stir anything up, just looking for information. Do the others have problems or is it just personal preference. Thanks - Curtis

Re: IGN! UPGRADE? What is the best route???

I would go with an HEI with the built in coil. Keeps things simple.

Have you seen this one? I'd go with it if I had the $.

Re: IGN! UPGRADE? What is the best route???

the reason I want to know the advantages is that there is a MSD still in the box in the back seat of a truck we seized the other day. When the truck goes up for auction I want to try to buy it.

For a stock engine, why not get a stock HEI? one you can get parts for at any parts house in any town anywhere in the U.S.

I have the stock HEI, but I think the msd box would help on the
excess fuel I seem to have

Re: IGN! UPGRADE? What is the best route???

On a stocker I'd say your advantages are not that much running MSD, can't hurt but you do need a better dist/coil to take full advantage. I ran an Accel supercoil/cap and rotor for years and had execellent performance over stock. When I switched back to a stock coil to sell it I was amazed at the loss of power on top end. With a little work a stock HEI will work well.

I'm running a Mallory comp900 with 685 box(still needs to be wired in). Main advantage of boxes are multiple strike, timing retard, rev limiters, control options for nos.

You need to upgrade wires and coil to get max perf out of the dist/boxes.

Re: IGN! UPGRADE? What is the best route???

so pretty much more speed at the top end. Better gas mileage?

I have a late 70's 350 in my truck with the stock HEI. Just wondering.

Re: IGN! UPGRADE? What is the best route???

I'm not having much fun with my MSD this week. Had to replace the magnetic pickup in the distributor, they tend to fail at random and leave you on the side of the road. It's still missing out and dying, I think it's a grounding problem now. I may go back to points and stuff I can look at and fix.
