Plug wires, headers, & HEI

The picture shows what the the PO had run for wires with my headers, which left many burnt wires.

I will be running the same Dynomax long tube headers and I have factor HEI. What premade set of wires work best, and should I run them down and behind the headers or come from above? I know a lot of folks run the 77-78 vette wires for the ramhorns, but since I am actually in stages of assembly, I want to know which way would be best with the headers.

Thank you.

Re: Plug wires, headers, & HEI

this is the best free way to do it for what i have. this is a before shot but i kept the headers and hei. 90 degree ends on the wires and t-handle valve cover hold downs, then zip tie them there, and they stay off the headers.

I have a big block but same idea. I went with Moroso lumes and a cut to fit set of wires. That way you can custom make your own set and have a clean set up. Its very easy to do. The wires are from Morosa as well.

Re: Plug wires, headers, & HEI

i've always liked the make your own wire sets// most important part of the job in my opinion is the wure looms // people won't hesitate spend near $100 bucks on the wires but get cheesy looms for 69cents and don't understand why thier wires get trashed ???

Re: Plug wires, headers, & HEI

The thing to do is to keep the slack out of them using the looms. I get wires for a SB and over the valve covers. I've never had any problems with getting wires burnt.

Re: Plug wires, headers, & HEI

I went with "Jegs" universal set and got the wire loom set from Autozone. I have about $50.00 into this setup. They fit good and are out of the way.

Re: Plug wires, headers, & HEI

Tell me more about the 77-78 vette wires for the ram horns, I have ram horns on my 72 GMC and a HEI do they fit better?

Currently I made up a set of wires by taking all the longest wires from 2 sets of used plug wires I was thinking a set from a big block.

Forget the vette wires cause they have shields over the wires to route them from the distributor and along the engine block and behind the rams horns up to the plugs. Unless you want to spend big bucks for the shields and the mounting brackets for them and you don't want to see the wires.
Go to e-bay and check some engine pics of 77 & 78 vettes sale and you'll see what I mean.

Kelsfine has a nice setup if you want to see the wires and run them cleanly.

So whats the best setup to use with the ram horn manifolds and HEI?

I like using the OEM wires (Packard) I usually get 150k miles out of a set...

Re: Plug wires, headers, & HEI

I like to use zip ties. LOTS of zip ties. Its easy to do just wrap one tie around the wires & put another one between the wires, just like in my neat little drawing. I added a pic but you cant see them very well...corn

hoser - You don't have to run them in the special shields. The main thing about them is they are longer. You'll definitely have to use some kind of wire clips, but the extra length that they built into the wires to run in those special shields make them easier to manuever under the ramhorms.

Duh...I forsomereason missed the post above.....yeah...what the pictures show
