67 SWB build thread

Another build thread?!?!? Well, everyone else is doing it so...here we go.

I bought my 67 off a friends brother about a year and a half ago. It's been pretty well beat on, but I'd like to do my part to keep one more on the road.

Here are the only "before" pictures I have.






I now have the bed and front clip off, and am debating taking the cab off. If I could find a good big window cab, it's coming off in a heartbeat. The 350 and four speed have been pulled and sold and I have a 454/TH400 to replace them with.

I am in the process of rebuilding the chassis. I am replacing all of the steering components, adding power steering, adding front disc brakes, adding tilt column, adding 4/6 drop, converting to 5-lug and getting new wheels and tires.

I really don't have the time or money to go all the way with the whole truck right now, but I am going to atleast get the chassis and drivetrain REAL healthy and just make it a good weekend parts truck, with the option to be a back up if one of the daily drivers go out. Ofcourse, the wife would be running the kids to pre-school in it if that happened because I commute 45 minutes, each way to work. I also need to immediately do something about the primer before she rusts away on me.

Beyond that, it'll have to wait. I also own a 72 Chevelle that I bought when I was 15 years old. I'd really like to get that going also, so the whole family (wife and two kids) can go cruising with me.

I am going to do my best to take pictures along the way, hoping something along the rusty road will help someone else on the board, like soooo many others have helped me.

Not sure what the booster is off of, but it looks a lot like the one that was on my 98 silverado.

Truck looks to be agreat start, mine came out of a 'barn' and looked lots worse off then yours does.

Keep plugging away at the truck and the Chevelle, it will get done one day

It looks like something off of a 81-87 chevy truck. It has the 2-extra holes @ the top of the firewall mounting bracket, the later style alum mstr cyl, & a big 11" (?) pancake booster.

Got a little more done today. Taking tomorrow off to go to the Goodguys show in Pleasanton with the family.
I managed to get all the front suspension and steering components off today and removed the motor stands and sway bar brackets.

I had noticed that the right front was about an inch-and-a-half lower than the left front. I always figured someone heated the springs to get it down and one side went lower than the other. As you can see, I was wrong. It looks like one coil from the top snap off?!?!

Anyways, all I now is I sure can't make a pile of old parts as fast as that Stacey guy from TRUCKS! can.

Now it's time to order parts.

Looks like you have a collection similar to mine (truck/chevelle). I work in Modesto, so I drive right by ya everyday. I'd like to check out your rides sometime. Let me know. Are you going to the goodguys show?

I don't know if it counts as progress or not, but I got one of the easiest steps done today. Ordered and picked-up parts!!!! I gotta do something to get my thread back near the first page.



I have also started cleaning up the front end to get it ready for paint. I test fit some tubular motor stands that I bought from a fellow board member. Found out that a 67 was a wider top flange on the channel frame that is going to require me to have to narrow it for the stands to work.




I contacted performanceonline.com about this, and they said that I was the second one to have called with that problem. I posted the problem here on the board and naturally got a quick response telling me about the difference in the frame on the 67.

When I went to pick up my parts at Early Classic today, they also told me because I was putting a big-block in that I would have to narrow the frame. (I think because of clearance for exh. mani/hedders and well....just room for that big azz motor.)

If anyone is keeping track, there are only two differences between the 67 and the 68 and up frame.

1.) Wider top flange on the frame where the motor mounts bolt in.
2.) No dimple for power steering box.

I also hit the junkyard last weekend for a tilt-column (still need an intermediate shaft from a 69 and up) and a 3-1/2 turn power steering box.

I also am debating pulling the cab so I can remove the old manual tranny crossmember. I am looking for a big window cab that is in good condition. My cab is a small window, needs rockers and it has been hit and very poorly repaired in the drivers door jamb. I'd like to do this before I put the tilt in, but we'll see. I'd like to have this thing on the road sometime this spring too.

Hope to make progress this weekend, but it's my daughter's 4th birthday so we'll see. Wish me luck!!!

Thats what i was looking for, thanks! What is the approximate diameter of the hole where the radiator support cushions go. Im putting a 67 front clip on a 71 frame and the holes seem too big.

Did you just wire bush the fram to clean it ..... are you going to por-15...powdercoat it or what..

I used a sanding disc called a Sandblaster. It attaches to a grinder and works really good. Last quite a while too. I am going to get it cleaned up a little and use Eastwood's Rust Encapsulator and Gloss Black Chassis paint. I probablly won't go as far as I have on cleaning some of this stuff down to bare metal. I just don't have a regular hand held wire brush right now, so I've been passing the time using the grinder so far. Now I'm getting in to a-arms and stuff and there is just no way to get into that stuff.
