I've always used the PH30 for the 350 in my truck, but the parts guy tried to turn me on to a PH5 - twice as tall, but reading tonight it looks like it has an anti-drainback valve...why the heck would I need this?

What are you using?

I am pretty sure any filter with a PH is Fram right? I quit using Frams quite a while ago. I haven't heard anything good about them.

Whatever you use get the one with the anti-drainback valve in it. It keeps the oil from draining out of the filter after you shut it down. This helps the engine build up oil pressure much faster, because it doesn't have to refill the filter on start-up.

i had a fram filter in my f-150 and the inside cloplosed and brew the motor before i could cut it off and fram would not buy to fix my engine

fram filters are junk. Cut one open and look for yourself. Less filtering surface, poor construction, just very low quality.
One of the best for the dollar is NAPA gold. Made by WIX. That's what I run on my stuff. There's better filters out there, but they get expensive though.

There are better filters than fram for the money. The AC filter you have been using are good as is wix or purolators. There isnt a need for the anti drain back valve on filters that are mounted vertical as on Chevy V-8s - the oil has no where to drain to. When a filter is mounted horizontally then you need the anti drain back valve as the oil can then drain back into the engine when it isnt running and the filter will be dry so to speak at start up.:::::::CB

How could the filter drain when it's hanging down? That was my question about the drainback...didn't seem like it would be needed.

I'm kinda surprised - I've been using Fram since my first car and never had any problems. I'll pick up a couple of the other ones and cut them apart with my filter cutter and see.

I am still interested in the specific filters - P/N.

I run #1218 Delco filters. They fit any GM engine that I'd ever care to own.

The last time I bought an AC filter there were metal shavings all over it. I always wipe them off, but this one looked as if the parts of it hadn't been cleaned before assembly. I took it back to AZ. They most likely returned it to the shelf.

That's #1061 for the NAPA Gold. Put a 5 in front for the Wix.

I've heard AC, Puralotor, Wix, Napa and Motorcraft are all very good. I usually try to buy Powerflo at Pimp Boys (when I happen to be near one) since they're just Puralators with a different label and they're CHEAP.

Fram actually has a reputation of having really good filter media. It's just that their drain back valves are poorly designed and leak. I've had a couple of bad experiences with Frams related to the dry startups and I'll never buy one again.

Good point on the vertical filter not needing a valve. Maybe Frams would be fine on these then.

the way sbc filter are mounted .. there no way it could drain out once its full ... am i wrong ? ...

i use ACDELCO and napa gold .. which ever store im at when i need a filter

Anyone else put strong magnets on the bottom of there oil pans ???

Fram was a first class filter back in the old days,then the company was bought out and cheaper mfd.and parts were used to up the profit bottom line.There are issues with the ADBV and also the sealing of the filtering element that would cause oil to flow thru the filter without being filtered.There are people that run nothing but fram and get thousands of miles without problems so who knows. There are better filters out there for less $ than fram.Google bitog for bobistheoilguy site for info on oil and filters.:::::::::CB

There was an oil filter thread on here some time ago that went on for 3 pages or so... I think on that thread someone posted you could use Wix #51794 which is supposed to be much larger than 51061. Can anyone verify this? Also, will filters that work on a SBC also work on a BBC?

Ah, I forgot about that issue. This was actually because the endcap is/was made of cardboard or a type of paper and would blow out if it saw any significant pressure spike. Once blown, oil flowed right through the filter w/o going through the media.
