headliner repair on 92k1500

the headliner foam must have given up after 14 years, because the whole thing just dropped down. what do i need to do to replace it? can i somehow redo it, or is a replacement available somewhere. i would like to reuse it if i can, because then the color would still match up.

I have done several headliners and there area couple of things that you can do. First, I will tell you that the cost is about the same both ways so, you can decide where you want to go.

Take the headliner out of the truck (take the trim off of the sides and the visors out, then the plastic piece along the back can be removed or just loosened to allow the fiberglass piece to slide out. Once it is out of the truck you can 1) take a brush and remove all of the old foam material from the headliner and then glue the new material onto it, or 2) take the headliner to an upholstery shop that does automobiles and have them do it. Remember the cost is about the same for the material and glue compared to them doing it and lettting you re-install it.

The material can be purchased at most upholstery shops or material outlets for sewing supplies. The last batch I got was from the place my wife buys all of her material for the grandkids clothes (same quality of material). The glue should be a good quality of upholstery glue and it owrks best to spray it on, rather than using a brush (upholstery shops use a paint gun and set the nozzle to a point where it sprays the glue.

The cost here in the great state of Kansas for having someone do the headliner is about $60.00 average. The cost of the material and the glue is going to be close to that, then you still have to do the work.

Go to a reputable salvage yard and pick up a headliner from a truck that is still holding strong and was taken care of a pay $40.00 or less if you pull it. Then, just pop it back in place.
