with 4 way flashers on, stuff goes crazy??hep me

All the electrical stuff on this 86 works OK (except dash light dimmer) UNLESS I try to turn on the 4 way flashers. at that point if i hit the brake a front park light will come on- dash lights go out - and other assorted nightmares. The switch is JUST a switch inside the column right?? or is it one of those nightmare multi-task switches and it's prolly shorted out inside making the other things go nutty. ANYONE have this before, or as usual ,is it JUST ME

I HATE electrical problems with a PASSION!!! I honestly haven't had one do that before. I don't know if I should congratulate you or not. With how the turns are on these, I don't care to guess. I had one that the blinkers were going screwy on me and finally found that it had a bad ground in the rear harness. I am guessing a short too, but no clue where to check, but here is a wordy bump for ya!

Yeah, the hazard switch is a single duty switch that is wired in parallel with the signal switch. (So it overrides the signal switch.) The hazards are over ridden by the brake switch when depressed. With the hazards on, when the brake is depressed, the tail lights, side markers and front parking lights should stay lite up. Kinda like what you observed. My guess is that if your dash lights are going out (when hazards on, brakes depressed), you might have the 'hot' wire between the hazard switch and the brake switch shorted to ground.

I dont recall ever having to go after one of these or not(hazard switch) or at least not on a 84 -up where everything is inside the column. are they accessible?? I'm sure they must be buried under the turn signal switch.?? DAVE

EXACTLY! It isn't so bad since it actually doesn't "work" yet. I posted a pic of it when I was working on it last night in my picture thread.

Re: with 4 way flashers on, stuff goes crazy??hep me

OH the fun continues. the 4 ways work fine now but Oil pressure , fuel and temp gauge bury now when i pull the headlights on. Thought for sure that was a bad headlight switch but i changed it out for a good one and it does the same thing?????????????JUST ONCE i'd like to buy one of these trucks that hasn't got electrical problems. Re: with 4 way flashers on, stuff goes crazy??hep me

found that problem too. the multi connector in the back of the cluster was not making good contact. even though i had checked it ten times as i was installing the cluster the bottom part was trying to pop out. all gauges work OK, but the OP gauge is going to need a sender(no surprise). it goes high then low back to hgh etc. DAVE
