I bought a set of used tubular motor stands and went to check the fit of everything the other day.

these are the stands from performanceonline.com

As you can see, they don't come anywhere close to making the bolt holes. I took a look at thier webpage and an article in Classic Trucks magazine and noticed it looks like they cut a moon shaped section out of the frame to make them fit. Check out this picture and maybe you can see where they narrowed the top leg of the channel frame. (very bottom picture)

I have already emailed thier tech support to make sure this is what needs to happen, but I'm sure that's what they are going to come back with.

My question is do you guys think I should narrow the top of the frame like that or cut the existing angle off the motor stand and weld on one with a longer angle to reach over to the bolt holes?

That's not the way it mounts. You should have gotten 2 tabs that weld to the frame and the part with the bolt through it goes to the tab. The the part against the cross memeber goes to the engine block. If I'm thinking correctly. I ordered the one from Northwest Autofab because it's just a bolt in.

I could be wrong though. I think that's right though.

mine fit perfectly....no mod, came with all hardware, very pleased

and the engine mounting plates and mounts

I have a 72 GMC and bought the same mounts for my big block. They mounted in the existing holes without a problem. The motor nested properly as well. I would call them to ask why yours didnt work.

I have looked at all the picts, and I can see a difference, the picts with the mounts installed show how the frame has a cut out. I am not sure if that is factory (I think it is because the pict of the ls1 going into an old frame has the cutout) so the question is, is the kit right for your year and was your frame an odity because your framerails are clearly wider than all the others pictured. Call them and see if there is anything they (manufactuer) can do, if not, then measure twice and cut the top off the frame.

Before I cut anything I would measure the width needed for the mounts to fit the engine. Its possible you got the wrong mounts for your truck. I would call before making any mods.

If you have a 67 or earlier frame, the top lip on the rails are wider.....68 up had the rails trimmed from the factory(needed to fit the BB engines). you might take a look at the later frame, & cut accordingly. Best of luck,

This is what I was referring to, I have a 67 with cutouts (done by PO). Check with the manufactuers as I stated above and they'll probably tell you they fit with "some modifications" I will have to look into those as I am planning a 5.3 or 6.0 swap into a 68 Burb, NICE!

thanks for all the replies guys. Like I mentioned before, I bought these mounts used from, a fellow board member, so I don't know how much recourse I'm going to have with performance online. I'm sure they are going to just tell me to cut the top flange back till it bolts up. But I sure will do what was mentioned and measure front motor mount bolt to motor mount bolt and make sure things are going to line up before I start cutting.

i used factory big block mounts in my 67 and had to cut the top rail of the frame. no big deal just sawzall and steady hand. adam

If you compare these two pics you will see that the second one has a narrower frame rail than the first.Looksl ike you're gonna need a saw

please tell me you are boxing in or otherwise finding some way to reinforce your frame after doing that? i believe that will totally kill the rigidity of yoru frame.

Shifty, the 69-72 came with the narrower top rail from the factory. I imagine you could box it, but they rolled off the assembly plant floor with narrow top rails to begin with, only the 67-8 has the wide rail. I too had to narrow the top rail to make the mounts fit. BTW I am going to make a set of the tubular mounts myself as a couple of hundred for $20 worth of material seems high to me, anyone interested in a custom built pair?
