I was lookin up parts for my truck and under the transmission section all it lists are th350's th400's powerglides and 3 speeds. I have a 4 speed granny gear. Are they considering the low 1st a low gear and its a 3 speed with a low gear?

Hello if you have 4 forward gears than its a 4 speed about a week ago there was a thread that showed pics of the trannies if you can find it.Mine is 4 speeds,over and down is reverse and they said its the 465.But the thread had all kinds of useful info.

At work napa, they only list 3 speeds and the autos, thats why im slightly confused

ok, that still doesnt answer my question, is it a 4 speed, or a 3 speed with a low gear.

Mine looks like a 420 or 465, I just find it odd that the listings in the catalogs only show 3 speeds and autos

since you have a '69, it *should* be a SM465 4 speed. but who knows if some p/o's got swap happy at one point or another.

its technically a 4 speed, but 1st gear is really too low for every day use. in some newer trucks, the shifter knob says "L" instead of "1". Either way, it is a 4 speed.

Yeah that tranny is a 4 speed, since it has 4 forward gears.

The books list them as a 3 speed with a low gear,but they are a 4 speed.If you drive it much you will most likely not use low gear,and start in 2nd,which is why they are that way I guess

If you have to push the stick to the passenger side and down o get it in reverse it's a SM465 most likely,or possibley a NP435,if not it's a SM420
The NP435 has an alumnum top the SM465 doesn't.
