Which TH-700R4 : Lockup or non-lockup

I want to use a 700R4 in the 68. What is the difference between a lockup and a non-lockup? Is it mearly electronics? Advantages/disadvantages between the two?

Thanks!
Bob

Re: Which TH-700R4 : Lockup or non-lockup

ALL stock 700R4's should have a locking TC.

Locking:
ADV: Better fuel economy, lower trans temp, longer trans life.
DIS ADV: Need to purchase lock-up kit and tv cable kit.

Check out bowtieoverdrives.com for these kits and more information. They are supposedly an easy install and I will be adding them to my truck soon.

Non-locking

ADV: Don't need to purchase electronics.
Dis Adv: lower fuel economy, higher trans temps due to TC slippage, shorter trans life due to TC slippage and excessive heat.

Re: Which TH-700R4 : Lockup or non-lockup

I went with the nonlocking TC for simplicity. I logged on aprox 40K with the 700R4 in my truck before I retired it. It was a daily driver and also towed my 22' camper several hundred miles a year. I believe I could have dropped another 100 to 150 rpm's at cruising speed (65 mph) with a lockup, but it still gave me an average of 17 mpg without the lockup. I had a transmission oil temp gauge installed in the out-going cooling line and I never seen it go over 155 degrees F. I did have a auxiliary cooler in line with the radiater cooler. When that truck is reassembled I will probably use that same transmission.
