Re: You guys will love this!! ONe Quick Square body!!

That truck belongs to a good friend of mine named Mike Doman. The truck is a 1979 Silverado, which Mike bought new from Beach City Chevrolet in Huntington Beach, California. I've been friends with him since 1985 when I took my 1966 Riviera to his body shop in Hesperia, California for a complete repaint. The truck is absolutely gorgeous and extremely fast. Is is a FULLY loaded truck, and nothing has been removed to save weight. It tips the scales at 4600 lbs. The motor is a 406 small block, with AFR 190 heads, a Comp Cams solid roller cam, J.E. pistons, Oliver rods, Callies crank, Holley 930 HP carb. He runs a 2-Stage Nitrous system from N.O.S., with the first stage (100 horse shot) activated with a micro-switch that is throttle activated. He leaves the line with this stage, and when it shifts into second gear, the second stage (200 horse shot) comes on. He's got his hands full with the column shift, so everything nitrous-related is automatic. The trans is a Turbo 400 with a Coan 3500 stall converter. The rear end is a 1970 Chevelle 12-bolt with a 3.73 gear. The posi unit WAS a stock Chevy unit that grenaded in the last part of the video. We were at the L.A. County Raceway in Palmdale last August when the video was shot. The track altitude is 3100 feet, and the air that night was bad because it was about 90 degrees.

The truck's best run that night was a 10.92 @ 131 mph. Correcting for altitude, the time would have been a 10.52 at sea level. The 60ft time was a 1.62, which is incredible for a 4600 lb truck with no trans brake. After that run, we decided the "lean" on it a little bit harder and put the bigger nitrous jets in it, move up the rev limiter 200 rpm, and leave the line at a higher rpm. The results speak for themselves.... kaboom...... The truck is back together with an Auburn Posi, 4.10 gears, adjustable coil-overs, and Cal-Trac bars. We took it to Super Chevy last weekend and it was a rain-out. We were hoping for 10.30s.

Sorry Mike, but the cat's out of the bag. I have helped wrench on this truck for the last 15yrs, and I love it like it's my own. He's considering retiring the truck back to everyday street use and putting the combo into an early Nova. No matter what, that truck blows people's minds whenever they see it. Oh, did I mention that the paint was applied in 1983 and it still looks perfect?

Building a small, high rpm engine with the perfect bore, stroke and rod ratio is very impressive.

Re: You guys will love this!! ONe Quick Square body!!

Wow..that makes me wonder what a similarly wild 406 (but with only 150hp Nitrous kit) would do in a truck that weighs 1000lbs less and, and gets mineshaft conditions to race in...
Unbelieveable that it's column though...you'd think that'd be the first thing changed on a drag raced truck...

Re: You guys will love this!! ONe Quick Square body!!

Mike (the truck's owner) didn't want to give up the factory power bench seat and put in a floor shifter. He's a stickler about factory GM parts (except the drivetrain, of course). After riding in the truck for many years and having had some stout machines myself, that truck is probably one of the scariest vehicles I've ever rode in. Around town it's actually quite nice, but when you do a full pass with the squeeze, it makes an evil move to the right when it hits second gear, like everything underneath is twisting. He's so used to driving it the truck that he drives it right back to center like nothing, all the while column shifting it! It actually cracked the frame right behind the driver's side cab mount, which is pretty amazing considering how stout Chevy truck frames of that era are. He refuses to put a cage in it because he wants it to look stock, and eventually, it will get retired back to a street-only vehicle. He wasn't expecting the response that people had regarding the video, and he's dying to do another one. If he does, I'll let you know.

I would like to see some pics of the rear suspension set up cause that thing hooks up great for a truck.
