Angry Turbo 400 rant

Ok, so Shleprock is in the garage, waiting for me to install the front suspension and start all the metal work. I look underneath and theres a nice red puddle. 2 years ago, I had the tranny pulled, and all the seals replaced. Still leaked. Turns out the 400 had 2 types of tranny yokes. One had a weep hole, the other didnt. They try sealing the hole, no dice. So they change out the yoke. seemed fine. Now, its leaking again. I haven't driven it in a while, just parked. Could that have something to do with it? I got a Gennie shifter to install, and will be patching the transmission hump. Do I try rebuilding my current tranny, or just replace it?

Re: Turbo 400 rant

They will seep after sitting long periods of time. Mine seep at the pan gasket.

Re: Turbo 400 rant

Mine leaks at the speedo gear housing after it's sat for a while. Too much wear in the shaft bore, and I need to replace the speedo housing.

Best to wipe it clean, then you have a better chance of seeing where it leaks. Another common leaks is the fill tube seal.

Try snugging the pan bolts a little.

Re: Turbo 400 rant

I hope it ain't the front pump seal, that's what happened to mine. It always leaked like hell, it didn't matter if it sat or if you drove it. We fixed that a long time ago, the seal only costed $.69. It wasn't very easy to replace it though!

Re: Turbo 400 rant

Some torque convertors will drain back into the pan after an extended period of being parked, only the top half of course, down to the convertor hub. This will overfill the trans by 3 quarts or so an fluild will come out of palces that are normally above the oil level like likage seals and such. Try checking the dipstick before starting after it has been sitting several weeks and see if it appears to be way overfilled, bet you will find it is, convertor drainback doesn't hurt anything but can be very messy.
