good online engine source?

anyone know of one? (besides this board, of course!) like a broken record, i, too am considering the modern 5.3 swap vs. rebuilt 350. while just about everything else on the truck will be restored to factory specs, it will also be my daily driver, and i'll need it to be very reliable. therefore, i'd like to go with the ls1 swap with 700r4 or 4l60. i'd like it to be smooth, quiet, reliable, not obnoxiously loud (like it is now.)

so, does anyone know of a good resource for pulled engine/trans combos? preferably online. i know someone was just selling one on the board, but i'm not quite ready to buy. i will be soon, though. i don't want a gm crate, just a gently used modern motor with overdrive trans and computer. wrecking yards here suck.

There are several sellers on ebay that part newer trucks for use in older vehicles. There are a couple of guys who have done the ls1 swap and hopefully they will chime in as to who is good to deal with. The dealers are good to work with as a new motor will have less of a chance for problems? Summit and Jegs sells new motors at a fair price.

Maybe a good compromise of the 2 is Fuel injected motor from a 88-95 truck. I haven't decided completly on which way to go either. Part of me would like a 5.3 and overdrive. A throttle body wouldn't be as much work and get the mpg and starting ease of FI.

Contact them by phone - ask them for internet sales (ebay/auction/etc.). Mention that you're part of this forum and that you are looking for a tranny (they specialize in like...less than 5k mile salvages of most kinds). They can get you the 4l60e, not sure about the 700R4.

I've heard of guys getting a 1-2 year old 4.8 or 5.3 with auto tranny, less than 10k miles for less than $3000 delivered to their office. You can save money on delivery by having it drop shipped to the shipping depot and picking it up in person (they can forklift it onto your truck, then you cherrypick it out of the bed).

thanks everyone. i'll check those out. i was thinking that somewhere between $2k-3k for decent (10k-50k mile) 5.3/4l60e with computer, wiring, exhaust, bits and pieces, would be about what i was looking at. does that sound about right?

yes it does.
