The “Sports Promotional” Code may suggest that this vehicle was manufactured as a 1977 Chevy Sport, which was an optional trim package introduced for the 1976 model year and continued through the 1981 model run, and was available only on ½ ton short bed pickups (both step- and fleetside models). The main feature of the Chevy Sport package was a distinctive exterior graphics treatment, notably absent from this particular truck.

The Chevy Sport trim option was coded as regular production option “Z77” in 1978 and later Chevy Pickup Data Books, but interestingly, no mention of the package is made in the 1976 and 1977 Data Books at all. The only discussion of the Sport Package in GM dealership literature for those first two years - that I have seen - is in various 1976 and 1977 customer brochures…but in those media, only package content and illustrations are presented; the option coding itself is not given. Suffice it to say, the “9J8” coding confuses me – does it refer to the 1976/1977 equivalent of the 1978-and-later Z77 package, or is it a reference to some other special order/limited edition? And assuming it is a “Z77” Chevy Sport, where are the graphics? I don’t know…

The PA6 Styled Wheels and Z62 Scottsdale package were included with the ’77 iteration of the Chevy Sport trim package, although they could also be purchased as stand-alone options for other pickups, so they alone don’t confirm its presence on this particular truck. However, the peculiar combination of 6Q9 floor carpeting, Z62 Scottsdale, and custom vinyl or cloth bench seating was exclusive to the Chevy Sport package for all years, to the best of my knowledge, so I suspect this truck is a Chevy Sport with the original outside graphics removed (and replaced with Billy’s special accoutrements!).

Perhaps Joe (ElGracho) or some owner of a ’76 or ’77 Chevy Sport can enlighten us!
