FS 3/8 Temperature Sensors

I made these mostly for myself and just to see if it would work. I am not a professional machinist, but I think they came out well. I can make some of these and ship them out if anyone is interested. They're just GP Sorensen sensors from Advanced Auto that I cut down from 1/2" to 3/8" pipe thread. Should work for temperature gauges in all 67-72 trucks with original gauges. $25 shipped in the lower 48. Thanks, Eric

Re: FS 3/8 Temperature Sensors

Eroc - I'll take one too - PM sent.

Just a note to others reading this if your're doing a newer engine swap you may need this since they may be no place screw in the normal sized 1/2 npt sender.

Re: FS 3/8 Temperature Sensors

Does anyone know where I could get the wire connector that fits the tip of the sending unit. Mine rotted away.

Re: FS 3/8 Temperature Sensors

I have Trick Flow aluminum heads and they have the 3/8 npt holes also. Those senders would be handy if you're using the stock gauges, (I use mechanical Autometer).

Good idea EROC!

Try Ron Francis www.wire-works.com

I use a spade terminal and bend things a little so it won't come off.

Re: FS 3/8 Temperature Sensors

Thanks Fred. Maybe I'll try a spade connector. It'll look a lot better than my alligator clips

I bought one from Ron Francis recently. Here's the link to their online catalog. Scroll about half way down. It's part number TS-10, and you need a BM-8 terminal as well.

Re: FS 3/8 Temperature Sensors

EROC I may need one of those. I bought a 3/8 sender from autozone but I'm not convinced it's the correct Ohms to read the temp correctly. I'm getting ready to put in a new radiator and figured I'd Ohm my current sender. Does anyone know what the Ohms are on the original sender?

It should be about 1000 Ohms when cold.

Re: FS 3/8 Temperature Sensors

I found this cached link on google back to board, not sure if it exists anywhere else - has some ohm test reading and other good info -
or search for ts6641

Re: FS 3/8 Temperature Sensors

Thanks to both of you for the info. My gut instinct is telling me the sending unit I have ain't right. I sure would hate to ever burn up the engine you see in the sig just because of some kind of coolant failure. It may be a few days before I have a chance to get to it and let everyone know.

Re: FS 3/8 Temperature Sensors

I finally got around to checking my sender today and it is definitely not the correct ohms. At room temp it measured 2200 ohms and in a boiling pot of water it was 174. According to pj it should have been 1000 at room temp but in the thread Green Machine posted these were the specs given.
Temp..........Factory (Ohms)
70..............490
180.............130
200.............110

Either way mine won't work. So, EROC if you still have the correct sender I need one for sure. However, I'm completely broke at the moment so it will be a few days before I can even afford $25 but I will definitely take one when I have the dough.

Re: FS 3/8 Temperature Sensors

Usually hate to bring old threads up..
But we are putting a '96 vortec 350 in a blazer at the shop and need a sending unit for it. so it will work with the early style gauge.

You still have some??

Re: FS 3/8 Temperature Sensors

If you still have any of the 3/8 NPT temperature sending units, I would love to buy one. New to the forum so not sure how to PM you, but will try to figure it out.

Re: FS 3/8 Temperature Sensors

I just had one made. I bought the sensor at advance auto parts, then took it into work to our machine shop and had them do a G job for me. Any machine shop should be able to do this for you. Not sure what they would charge though. And I am not sure how accurate the sensor will be now?

Re: FS 3/8 Temperature Sensors

That's what we are thinking about doing, but as common as the need for this is, it seems like someone would be selling them.
