New Air Cleaner Options
Hello all,
This is my first post. I just bought a 91 extended cab short bed w/350 and it's time for my first mod. I've narrowed it down to two options but I had a question about them. I did a search but couldn't really find what I was looking for. Can I use a one piece air filter that sits on top of the engine or do I have to buy an after market air filter that has a tube and that has a box at the end of it. I have attached 2 pics of what I am looking to buy. I prefer the crome one but I don't know if it will pull in enough air. Any info would be gtreatly appreciated |

Re: New Air Cleaner Options
i would go with the cold air kit, its pullin in colder air thought the fender than the on on top. i have the one on top and it sucks all the hot air from under the hood, not good for horsepower. it looks cool but thats about it. you can use the one on top but i think youll need either another small spacer under the air cleaner or a bigger one to clear the distributer, i know i had too.

Re: New Air Cleaner Options
The tube setup WILL give you more cool air on your motor than the old style air cleaner, but if you own one, why not use it and save the $200.00. I have a 4" K&N filter on my 91 Silverado and it works great. I removed the spacer from the Throttle Body and put a piece on the filter base to keep it from turning (Just like the spacer has). I also connected my vent tube to the bottom of the filter with a nylon hose barb elbow. That way everythin looks clean. I do feel a little affect from the hot engine bay air on really hot days, but it is minimal.

Re: New Air Cleaner Options
What do you consider a really hot day? I live in the San Francisco Ba Area where it rarely gets above 80. I also notice that you have headers and a tbi spacer. Which ones are they? Headers are going to be my next mod.

Re: New Air Cleaner Options
I put the full K&N kit in about two months ago and it has been great. I am actually getting 20-50 more km per tank, depending on how I drive it, so over time hopefully it will pay itself off.

Re: New Air Cleaner Options
I consider a "Hot Day" as 96 degrees or higher. I live in Kansas and the last two summers have had some days that were rather warm and humid. I used to live in the Bay Area. I lived in San Leandro for awhile and then I moved to Marin County (Novato), while I was in the Navy.
I put in the air cleaner and a Throttle Body helical spacer from Airaid. That spacer was worth some HP and gas mileage. |
