SAGINAW 4x4 ps gearbox numbers question
I'm looking at two SAGINAW 4x4 ps gearboxes which, I've been told, were from 72 trucks. Both stamped 5686815 on the barrel end. The other main casting numbers, which are located below the cover plates, are different... 7802644 and 7802644L.
If found the following numbers in a parts catalog... SAGINAW MODEL SERIES 959 7802644 7802644 7802644 7802644L 7802644L 7802644L 7802644L ... but no definition as to the difference. I'm trying to convince myself that the L is for large and might be for 3/4 or 1 ton trucks. Anyone confirm or put to rest my guessing? thanks, clay

In short, one is reversed from the other. I own a '73 dodge 4X4 3/4, it has a 7802644 casting on it. It mounts horizontally on a bracket. When you turn the input shaft left the output shaft turns right. I found an '80s 3/4 dodge 2/4 gearbox 7802644L, it was mounted flush to frame. You turn input shaft left, output shaft turns left. Won't work.
