plain steel wheel questions

im going to start looking for a set of plain steel wheels. 2 five lug 15x8's, are these are even out there available, and if so what did they come on? i think i alread have a set of 15x7's laying around here somewhere...and second question...will a set of 55/56 chev dog dish caps work on these? i have no idea if dog dish caps will only work on 14's or only work on 15's....im thinking the caps will work on either....any enlightenment would be appreciated.

Re: plain steel wheel questions

look for a Caprice SW or cop car like 73 till? I remember back in the day that they had a 15x8 large bolt pattern wheel, while the the Impala had the same size but with the small bolt pattern. i also remember that they tended to crack and be out of round both small and big bolt pattern

Re: plain steel wheel questions

I don`t think any car came with 8" rims. These were aftermarket by OEM supplier,Kelsey-Hayes.They may have been an option on 1/2t camper trucks, but I don`t think so.I found mine here with a WTB thread.Pete Paulsen is another big wheel builder in California.Check around your area, there are wheel building shops all around.I had 10" white wagon wheels made for a Land Rover in the late-70s in Baltimore.Custom-built,of course, could be salty. The centers are all the same with a given bolt pattern with a given mfgr:small car-5,big car-five/1/2t truck. In other words, any GM dog dish that uses the outer "nubs" while interchange from any GM wheel,Corvair to pickup.

Re: plain steel wheel questions

I was thinking about getting my wheels widened by Stockton Wheel. Good to know there is question about their quality & service.

What about http://www.vintagewheel.com/ Do they carry steel wheels?

Re: plain steel wheel questions

There were many 73-87 Chevy pickups that came with the 5 lug ralleys in 15x8. Are you not wanting a ralley wheel? Just a plain steel wheel if I read your post correctly?

If you want to use the 15x8 ralleys, I bought a set a while back for $100.00 for a set of four. Then I had to buy trim rings, centers... etc.

Re: plain steel wheel questions

mmmm bbq, i will be there mike.

chris i dont know if you have heard of the hamb message board. its for trad style cars and customs up to 1964. zumo turned me on to that site. anyway if you were to go there and do a search on stockton wheels there are a few very large threads there about them. i would say that probably less than 5% of the responces were ok and the rest were amazingly bad.

not really looking for the ralley wheel style. just looking for plain steel i can paint white and pop some dogdish caps on like i did with my 4x4.

ive looked at some of those other vendors and they sure want alot of money for a plain ol wheel. what i would really like is a set of plain steel wheels that are chromed. ive seen some of those but the prices they want are crazy imo. those were soooo cheap when i was a kid...lol...getting old sucks =)

uncle just let me know what you turn up...thanks

heck i may just end up sticking with six lug instead of going to five...wonder if frank has anymore of those 8 in. wheels???

Re: plain steel wheel questions

6-lug wheels are easier. You can get 6-lug discs and/or drop set-ups.Back to the money thing, though.I know what you mean with these wheels back in the day.Back when there were a few choices and everyone was happy with those options.A chrome wheel was $10 more than painted. Now,a custom wheel is a "stock" wheel. When I bought my CheyenneSuper it had "Black Nugget" modulars and I`ve always had a thing for stock wide rims.I bought a set of 9.75x16.5s(in`91)for around $300,sandblasted them, and had them powdercoated white along with a set of standard width 16s for $200.Then you add the cost off nos hubcaps at $150 and your total is $650.In`91 there wasn`t a set of custom wheels that would cost you that much. It`s not the cheap way to go.Now,I bought a set from Uncle last year for a very reasonable price, thanks Uncle.I just had them blasted(I usually do my own)and powdercoated red for $260 at the same place.Back in`91 I checked into getting those rims chromed.I found that there wasn`t a shop on the east coast that would even do rims. When I get done restoring my Super I will buy Chrome OEM-types from Stockton. They won`t be cheap.

I'd be walking the yards with a tape CG.Seems that all bigger GM cars had large pattern wheels,Caprice, impala, caddy, bonneville, lesabre, ect.

Re: plain steel wheel questions

Finding a car with 8x15s in a junkyard gives new meaning to the term "needle in a haystack."I`ve always been keen on deep-dish wheels of this type or anything different about a car`s stance or track while going down the road since I`ve been driving and have never seen any.Although, qksilver says they are listed in the Hollander.I believe him,but that just means something came with them, not that a significant amount did.
