Is it an aftermarket housing? If it is I would replace it with a GM part.

The stat bore in my Performer intake was cut too deep which allows the stat to sit too low and not seal. I took a piece of 0.032 in. stainless safety wire and formed it to fit in the bore under the stat which raised it enough to compress the gasekt. This fix has worked for several years on my daily driver.

Re: rain sucks

You might have a warped housing. I would replace it.

Fel-Pro makes a premium thermostat housing gasket that fixed one I had that always leaked. I won't use anything else, now. Instead of being made of paper, it is a piece of blue plastic that looks like it has a red silicon bead around the perimeter.

I have been able to get them in all of the local auto parts stores for around 4 or 5 dollars. Just ask the counter person for the most expensive thermostat housing gasket they have, and that will probably be it.

Re: rain sucks

I bought a Mr. Gasket thermostat housing with a O-ring in it. Worked perfect untill I removed it, put it back on and OVERTIGHTENED IT! Then it leaked like a siv. So I took it off again, put a light bead of blue silicon on the O-ring and its been 6 months and not a single drop!

I think the housing was like $5-12, well worth it. If you get the one with the O-ring be careful not to overtighten it!
