Question Slow Turnover when engine's hot?

anyone know what causes this? timing? truck cranks beautifully when cold or when it has been sitting for 20-30 min. after being hot. when hot, it's almost like the battery is dying, and it cranks with such difficulty (the battery is not dying and the starter is new - but it did this with the old starter as well.)

any ideas?

sounds like heatsoak on the starter to me. try using a starter wrap or heatshield on the starter and solenoid and see if it continues.

Timing could be too far advanced, starter even if new could be getting heat soaked, especially if you have headers. You might try one more starter, get one for a big block application, they have more torque, bigger parts inside, same size on the outside.

I had the same issue with the big block in my 68.. Turns out there was corrosion on the terminal on the positive battery cable where it bolted to the starter.. new cable installed.. all is fine..

I had the same problem. Finally bit the bullet and got one of these: CVR Protorque Mini The thing is awesome! No heatsoak even with my full-length headers and it cranks up fast! Weighs less too.

i don't think i can swallow $160 fro a new starter when i just got the $35 core exchange on this one, but it sounds like it could be worth it. i have less than an inch of clearance between my starter and factory exhaust. can i fit starter wrap/heat shield?

is heat wrap something i can walk into pep boys and get, or will i have to order it? sounds like asbestos blanket.

the starter shield stuff is like ... almost like that silvery crap you put in your window to block out the sun. it will fit. it's like a small pouch/blanket. you might find it at the auto parts chain store.

This is what I did and I haven't had a problem in the 2 years since I did it.

It also makes the cable going to the starter so it is only hot when you are cranking the truck (which is good if you have ever melted that cable to your headers... )

It is cheap and I went through everything you have including a heat shield and this is what worked for me.

Oh, I am running HEI, if you still have the old ballest wire it will get connected to the "I" terminal on the new solenoid...

WELL.. IT'S EITHER THE TIMING OR THE STARTER. I WOULD TRY THE TIMING FIRST BEFORE I SPENT $160 ON A STARTER THAT MIGHT NOT BE THE PROBLEM. ANY TIME YOUR NOT SURE OF THE SOURCE OF THE PROBLEM, I ALWAYS TRY THE CHEAP OR FREE STUFF FIRST. IF YOU DO WIND UP BUYING ANOTHER STARTER DON'T GIVE THEM YOUR NEW ONE AS A CORE. INSTEAD GO TO THE BONE YARD & GET A JUNK ONE & RETURN THE NEW ONE FOR A REFUND. YOU PROBABLY AREADY GAVE THEM A PERFECTLY GOOD ONE. JOHN

thanks guys. nope, my old one was definitely trashed. it had always been sort of loud when cranking, i thought. then it was making crazy grinding/chewing racket the other day. pulled it, and the gear was ripping itself off of the shaft. it was almost completely torn through. caught it just in time, hopefully my flywheel isn't damaged. the new starter works like a dream...i can't ever remember it being that quiet and easy to start (except for the heat thing.) maybe the other one was always improperly shimmed/aligned.
