another 67 question

Just started a thread, so I thought I'd start another one, probably gonna stir up some strong feelings here. So let me say, this is not set in stone, it is just a question.

I am thinking about swapping everything from my 72 into a 67 body I have. The 67 does have the small back window and I really like the big window on my 72. How hard is it to cut out and replace the small window with a big window? I do not want a butcher job on a fairly good 67 cab, but I am considering this.

Please, again, I have not decided to do this, just looking to find out how hard it would be and what the pros & cons are.

I haven't done it, but since there aren't any other inspiring posts for you...

I'd think that you would be best off cutting out an entire section around the rear window. Kind of like a rear cab section replacement. That wouldn't be that hard at all in terms of what has been done in metal work. Just chop the top below the body seam and above the window, then down into the door corner - then at the bottom just strait cut pretty much across the edge along the top of the bed.

The only other option would be to cut out a frame right around the window opening on the '72 and put it into the '67. But you're going to have to have that section either way I'm guessing. It be nice to have something solid to get your lines right, thus making the first method preferred I'd think.

With the money that a good 67 cab is getting, and considering where you are. Sell the 67 cab to one of us easterners, and go by a good big window cab, There are plenty around you and it would save all that cutting and the 67 cab would sell for a good amount here in the east.
I have seen many really good cabs in the Colorado, OK, Texas, New Mexico and Arizona area's that are going for 200 to 300 and that 67 depending on condition would go from 500 to 1000 here.
I am not sure what you time is worth but I spent 16 hours taking a big window cab and making it a small window.

I have a 67 small window cab that has rust in the cowl.....ONLY!! The floors, rockers, windsheild frame (the whole rest of the cab in other words) are minty fresh, just sitting in the garage in the way. The rust repair in the cowl is excruciatingly simple (all flat panels, cut and weld in flat metal, done!!) I am sitting on it, waiting for a good 2wd frame to come along and force me to buy it!! qksilver, I traded the 67 I got from you for the 68 Burb (and enough cash to cover the deal I made you...ie it was the amount I took the 67 in trade for, from you?? understand?) I rolled and destroyed, kinda hope I find a short frame to build the 67 cab into a truck. BTW don't bother with the window graphting, it will be way easier to unload the 67 cab and find or use your 72 cab. Good Luck

I already have the 67 body and was trying to get an idea if this was a good idea, easy to do, or maybe a really bad idea. At the body shop labor rate around here of $40.00 / hour, 16 hours would be $640.00. That seems like just a bit much for what I am wanting. I also talked to a shop today about this, they also two days of hard work to do and a high possibility of messing up the job.

So I have decided against this if I do build the 67, guess I will just have to get used to the small window.

Not that that is a bad thing.

rauto13....not using your 72 cab but, like qksilver advised....selling the 67 to get a good 72. Im sure there's enough fella's out there who could buy/sell/trade with you to get another 72 cab and/or help you find one. Understanding that its just a thought for now but, I agree with that rather than cuttin up the 67. Plus you could end up with a couple usable parts if needed off the 72 you do have that got toasted.

I bet you can come up with a big window cab cheaper and quicker than you can do all the body work.Someone on the board has one they are itching to sell I bet.

I miss read a post, The reason I was thinking about this is I have the 67 complete body. The truck is pretty complete, needs an engine, trans, few other little pieces. And since it seems like I have just acquired a spare engine & tranny, I was thinking that if the back window swap wasn't too involved, I might do it. I would like the cab to match the frame, but that's nitpicking.

One other thing, I have to have a running truck by Memorial day to go camping & pull the boat with. Don't think the wife's Diamante would be up to pulling the boat.

She is pushing me to buy a 99-00 Chevy. So if I do build the 67, it will have to be quick. Running in less than a month, while working full time.

OK honestly,if you have a couple of mechanically inclined friends,you could prolly pull the engine,and put it in the other truck one weekend,and finish it up the next.If you have everything you need,and they are really good you could start on friday night,and drive it off sunday afternoon,I've done it!
Everything should pretty much fit from one to the other,just a few bolts

Brainchilds got a good idea. Hell, I'm no motor master but, I'll come over and help swap it out. I live in Tiawah and i don't think you're too far away from me. can always consider the cab swap for another time if it stays a possible option for you.

Cab swap isn't that hard, just a little time consuming

Forget feelings and all that.This would be alot of work and very hard to do.It`s double-wall.Even if you`re a great bodyman the work is double,in/out.As a bodyman,he`ll talk you out of it.You`re swapping bodies anyway.Start sellin`the small window and find a 10x more common big window.That`s easy.

Yeah, I had a 68 cab given to me the other day. Definitely swap cabs.
