Re: gas smell

Check the gasket arround the filler neck on the outside of the truck...replace if cracked. Check O ring gasket under sending unit...replace if cracked/worn. Check rubber parts of fuel lines on tank end and replace if cracked. Inspect for pin holes on fuel tank...JB-Weld if leaking. Inspect engine compartment for fuel leaks. Carb. area, fuel lines.

Re: gas smell

Also, if there is an exhaust leak under/before the cab... that can be very misleading.
The 2 main areas on the in cab tank that I have found for leakage ar the filler neck (commonly the joint from filler to tank is cracked from ppl leaning on the pump nozzle when pumping) and the rubber o ring on the sending unit piece.
Slide the seat forward and look for spots int he dust that look like it's had fuel rinsing it off.

Re: gas smell

I had my 71 parked in the garage for 4 days while on vacation and when I got back the garage smelled of strong gas fumes. One of the rubber lines to the fuel pump started leaking... There are many different points for a possible leak... check everything. BTW, Welcome to the board!

Re: gas smell

Even with a new gas cap I don't fill much above 3/4 tank because it can still leak when the gas slops around in there. Might help.

Re: gas smell

Just my 2 cents but, When I took the cab off mine to send to paint I found a return line for the fuel pump has a factory splice that is conected by a chunk of rubber hose, it was really hard to see and I did not know it was there before. The rubber hose was so bad it was a hiccup away from leaking fuel in excess(was already seeping). I mention this because it is very close to my header and it wouldn't take much to light on fire from there. Just my 2 cents ,Dave

Re: gas smell

My 71 had gas tank leak (owned this thing back in HS). About got sick from the fumes. Replaced with junkyard tank. Pretty easy.

But rust / dirt in the junkyard tank then clogged up my fuel filter, cause stalling at highway speeds. Replaced fuel filter every oil change for a while until all the gunk was out of the tank.
