Blazer/Jimmy 4x4 Reputation
I'm new to owning a first generation Blazer, I've had my 72 Blazer for less than one year. I'm wondering about the off roading capabilities of our rigs and if our Blazer/Jimmys are known for getting stuck or making it through most 4x4 conditions.

If it came factory with open differentials then you'll do no better/worse than any other 4x4 of the era with the same set up, having a factory posi would make all the difference. Then there's tranny option's, gears...ect. Our trucks are pretty wide/heavy on the trail, that would play into it all as well. Of course then there's driver error (make or brake) and 'fish' tales too. You have to separate fact from fiction during most off road stories if you know what I'm sayin'. |

Re: Blazer/Jimmy 4x4 Reputation
They are ever bit as good as any other comparatively equipped 4wd.What makes them better is they are GMs,they`ll keep running. They are better than a pickup for manuverability due to short wheel base.A jeep is only better in cases where the smaller size counts.Jeep suck on the road, though.Blazers are the first on-off road SUV IMHO.With a little tweeking...

Re: Blazer/Jimmy 4x4 Reputation
The 1969 Blazer kicked butt all over the other vehicles in its class. It drove better it had a lower center of gravity it had better power options and it served a broader range of utility. You could tow more and haul more with it and although wider and larger than the Commando, Bronco, Scout it was still very capable off road and the extra weight provided additional traction. Even stock the K5 can handle some fairly technical terrain with the right driver. Being born and raised in Colorado I have seen my share of off road capabilities in a broad range of vehicles and what I like the most about full sized Blazers, Bronco’s and Ramchargers is that they feel a lot more stable and confident than Jeeps and smaller off road vehicles. Now don’t get me wrong everyone knows a Jeep can defiantly handle Off road better than most other vehicles because they were purpose built. I just hate fourwheeling in Jeeps and 1st gen Broncos because I feel if you haven’t rolled it yet you will and I want to be as far away from it when it does.

Re: Blazer/Jimmy 4x4 Reputation
Even with stock setup, the amount of clearance under a first gen blazer is really remarkable. I don't offroad, but I noticed it when I was underneath swapping gas tanks

Re: Blazer/Jimmy 4x4 Reputation
Actually if you asked Jeepers they would tell you Blazers are nice grocery getters but heavy wide turds that have 0 off road capabilities and you should own a Jeep or your just not cool. LOL

Re: Blazer/Jimmy 4x4 Reputation
In the 1st few weeks of me having my blazer... i was driving down a vineyard road.. brush came in and got narrow... i'm screaming at my friend to watch his side cuz i'm pushing back brush as i drive and i don't want to fall into something on his side i cant see...
So you know what happens right? I drop MY side into a big ol Hole! Actually there was a pipe in the road only wide enough for a vineyard tractor that would funnel runoff under the trail.... well as said i dropped me front left tire into where the pipe wasnt covering the road anymore... from all the erosion(sp?) the hole on that side (runoff side) was deeeep! So deep the front left tire was just chilling in the air... the right front tire was STUFFED, the blazer was resting on the driver side rocker  I freaked out, i was new to the blazer. I took a look at the front tires and said no way, i must have just snapped my front axle to be able to have the front tires at the angles they were at... Looked under, hey alright, still in 1 piece! I was prob going 5mph or so and just slammed it... After scratching our heads (And my friend rubbing his - he hit the windshield frame ).. i said f!ck it.... put it in 4lo.... and it backed right out w/ out hardly spinning a tire..... Ever since i've been impressed with our blazers. No, not any hard core wheeling, but if i did that in say, my dads durango at the time or another modern SUV - well, let's not even go there! edit: that was stock before my lift and tires etc etc. Last edited by Medicanman71; 05-11-2006 at 03:18 PM. |

Actually, in addition to the Blazer, I've got two Jeeps... well, a Jeep and a Willys. I like all of them but for different reasons. Only difference is you could talk me out of the Jeeps but I'll never sell the Blazer!

Two weeks ago I would have figured that you must of just had a bad experience or something to be talking sch!t like that but when we were at Rausch Creek last week, two big groups of Jeeps showed up on Saturday to wheel there as well. So now it turns out, I gotta completely agree with ya. (sorry Resto) They showed up and wouldn't give anybody else the time of day, what a bunch of asshats! Acted like Jeeps were the only vehicle to own. And we all know that honor goes soley to 1st gen blazers!! |

Re: Blazer/Jimmy 4x4 Reputation
Best offroader I've had was a '44 stock military jeep. 45 mph tops on the highway but was like a tank off road. With the exception of sand drags, my blazer doesn't go offroad anymore.

That's funny, I know not all Jeep owners are like that my dad used to own a CJ5 and he wasn't. But here in CO there are alot of jeep clubs and they are the exact same way you described. Jeeps are fun but to be perfectly honest I wouldn't own one becasue they scare me off road I really hate fourwheeling in them.

Re: Blazer/Jimmy 4x4 Reputation
"It`s a full-sze thing.If I have to explain,you wouldn`t understand."
Jeeps are burly-bad with the axles, transfer case, tranny, and engine from a GM 4wd.But stock with a 3spd,Dana30s,and model20 t-case,they`re right breakable.I think they are neat and like them.I also always wanted to downsize a Blazer to be compatable with CJs,Scouts, and 1st Broncos. But,look who the herd followed. I used to go wheelin`with all Jeeps in my Blazer and I`d go last so to not mess up the ruts so no one got steered and stuck.I`d follow along making my own path. Also,if it got too tough for one,I could always pull them back out so they could turn around and head back.I MISS MY BLAZER!!!

Re: Blazer/Jimmy 4x4 Reputation
I would like to know how our Blazers do in the deep sand. I used to have a sand rail that I could just Float over the deep stuff in first gear going 5mph.
Will our Blazers just cruise through, Or get Stuck. I've Blasted through deep sand going around 15-25mph but would love to just Idle through. |

I totally agree not to bash jeeps but my dads 72 CJ5 was a dog with the 304V8 3speed trans and dana 20 TC it would run out of power in low range on real steep grades. A 360 AMX engine fixed that though and then it was crazy. The same with land crusers they can be total baddass off road machines with chevy parts.
