Auto crossmember question...help.

Well my trans is bolted to the bolt starter lines up perfect with the flexplate, so bolted that in. Started to slide the auto crossmember so it will bolt up with the 700r4 rubber pad bolt down area. I couldn't get those bolts to line up, need to losen my engine mounts and "handle it" or "persuade it a little...that shouldn't be a problem. What looks like a problem is holes in the frame for securing the Auto Crossmember??? Didn't look like any were going to line up and drilling while the cab is on??? How the heck did you guys do this???

If I m not mistaken the 700r4 is abit longer then a 350 turbo so you may have to get it botled to the trans and somehow mark and drill new holes in the frame to get it buttoned up

Yes, its the holes in the frame for bolting the crossmember. The tailshaft on the 700 is a bit longer than a th350 so the crossmember will be further back.

Bolt the trans mount up, square everything up and bore new holes in the frame to bolt the crossmember down.

It can be done w/ cab on, after its all squared up like Tug said, and marked well enough, remove the crossmember and either use a right angle drill or take the hot wrench and burn a small hole and then drill them out for a clean hole I have all kinds of tricks like this over the years just take your time and it will all work out

in all reality, you don't really NEED those upper bolts. They haven't done a set up like that in 20 years.


Now, I'll assume the position to get flamed by everyone who thinks that if GM did it...then it has to be done that way. :flm:

I did the uppers and lowers in mine, but Andy is right. The passenger side with the brake and fuel lines in the way is a pain even with a small right angle drill. They hit the chuck and make it difficult to get a straight shot.

YUP PLACE A FLAT PIECE OF STEEL..between the frame and cab bottom.
when you drill out the upper holes and drill thru, you hit the plate not the cab bottom.
and andys right about trying to do it like GM did. GM did not put 700r's in these trucks.. thats why there are no holes that line up. they were not even made yet.

What I did was drill 2 new holes where the tranny mount blots to the crossmember. I used the existing holes in the frame to mount the crossmember.

Guess it might help if I had the engine was mounted on the right holes up front !!! Larry (Lemield) just came by with his nice green CST and I compared and took pics....I have the engine too far back. Ok project for tomorrow...move engine forward appx. 2".


F*#K.....I had it in the right spot all along...now I'm pissed...jeez....oh it's a learning experience isn't it!!!

i hpoe on your drive line you got a different yoke, the 350 yoke wont work.

Truck had a single driveshaft connected to a 3 on the tree trans. I don't know if the yoke is right? Driveshaft people are coming by to measure and pick up driveshaft for shortening ...we'll figure out the yoke at that point.

I thought the 700 had the 400 style yoke.... I KNOW the 200 4R has the Th350 style... but pretty sure the 700 doesn't.

The yoke on a tubro 350 is the same as the yoke on a 700r4...my trans was 3 on the tree...don't really know what it was. It was that way when purchased from the PO...350 engine 3 sp column shift.

i allways understood that the spline count on the 350 to the 700r4 where
diff, i know that the 2004r is the same as the 350. i've done that swap.
never did the 350 to 700r4.
