Cool The elves showed up - Finally met my Feb. goal!

Well, it has been a busy weekend so far.

Started with this last night:

Got it to this point early this morning:

And right now it looks like this:

My goal for February was to have the thing rolling... and I finally made it! Going to try to get the steering linkage all cleaned up in the next couple days and hopefully get some outside shots of the whole thing aired out. Then off comes the bed, and the rear suspension comes apart. Maybe the end isn't as near as it seemed

At any rate, I'm too stoked to keep this to myself.

Re: The elves showed up - Finally met my Feb. goal!

Thanks! Here's answers to your questions:

ECE 2 1/2" dropped spindles
Firestone 2600 224c bags
Cups are AirRide Tech. pieces, 1 5/8" tall (not sure if they're modified or not, bought them used)

Tires are 275/60/15... for now.

Oh, and the measurement is somewhat misleading (before I get called out on this), the back of the truck is still up on jack stands, so it is angled down in these shots. Accurate measurement coming soon.

Re: The elves showed up - Finally met my Feb. goal!

Alvin.. You obviously know what you are doin. But the first time I did a ground up I to painted my frame flat black but the problem is it doesent seal and it oil stains. I see alot of guys do there firewalls flat black. It looks great for about two months I always use high gloss on everything now. For all I know you might be painting this thing any color as early in the build as you are I just thought I would make a suggestion..Just in case...Hell it might be powder coated cant really tell..I stopped powder coating most of my parts because it nicks and scratches and you end up touchin it up with paint any way....Beautifull build so far. Keep the pics coming. After seeing your truck tonight I turned off the computer and the tv and went out in the garage for a couple of hours....

Re: The elves showed up - Finally met my Feb. goal!

Yeah, the flat black is what I would like to have, but like you said it just isn't practical. With how long it has taken me to get this far, I just want to get it together and drive it for a little while. Once I get everything working how I want, It will most likely come apart again and get done "right". Thankfully it's not gonna be a show truck by any measure, so as long as it functions I'm happy. Thanks for the tip!

Alvin, looking great! Thanks for the info on the lower cups, I've heard mixed opinions on those, some running cups, and some running just lower plates. I think I can use the lower cups as you have. Pictures speak volumes!

Re: The elves showed up - Finally met my Feb. goal!

Thanks guys. Things slowed down the last couple weeks as I had some chores to do around the house , and I was pretty busy trying to figure out my next move on the truck.

All new steering components should be at my house when I get home today. I was going to just degrease all my old stuff, but when I got it apart I couldn't stand the thought of putting the old stuff back on. Then it's on to ordering a wiring harness, fuel line stuff, rest of the air ride parts, a SECOND box of brake lines... I think you get the idea. It seems very close to being "together", but when I look at my parts list I'm still over $1k away .

Can you take some pics of how you ran your front airlines? What fittings did you use and where did you get them?

Thanks,

I used bulkhead fittings from *****************. I mounted them under the passenger engine tower. The best option I could come up with was to have the straight end of the bulkhead inside the crossmember and the elbow on top pointing into the passenger side frame rail. I really would prefer elbows on both sides, but I couldn't locate a bulkhead like that. Routing the lines inside the crossmember into the bulkheads was kinda tricky. The passenger side line is very short and makes a sharp bend into the bulkhead. I'm running 3/8" line and put a piece of thick rubber hose over the airline to keep it from rubbing the inside of the crossmember.

Adam, the toughest problems are never solved in leaps but in tiny steps--kind of like Tim Conway~~~~. Keep chipping away and the truck will come together---just like you want it too. Don't rush it or you will always regret it!
Looking good!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Nice frame!hehehehe

Re: The elves showed up - Finally met my Feb. goal!

Well I got a little bit more done today. My box 'o parts was waiting on the stoop when I got home from work. Ordered everything through Advance Auto Parts online and I gotta say it went pretty well. There's really nothing like a stack of new parts just waiting to go on.

I cleaned up the tie rod ends and started masking them off for paint. Trying to mask off the grease fitting holes had me scrounging around the garage when it hit me... EAR PLUGS! So I grabbed a couple old pairs of ear plugs (I knew I held onto them for a reason!) and stuck 'em in the holes.

Finally got out the ECE quick-ratio steering box I bought years ago and bolted it up.

So once this stuff is dry, I'll be putting the steering linkage together and hopefully be on my way to the rear suspension.

No, it will be a small block. I just thought the motor mount brackets were called towers. Seemed convenient to call them towers and the actual motor mounts by their name. But yeah, it's definitely a small block

Ear Plugs ---dam, forgot to take them out. No wonder everything has been muffleled for a while!!
My short bed truck is being dropped way down too but with a different process--just started converting it to 5 lug and am using 15" rallies with a 245x60 tire on it! Now if I just keep the air pressure to around 20lbs--hehehe.

Be careful! You keep it that low for too long, you might start liking the way it looks!

Re: The elves showed up - Finally met my Feb. goal!

Thanks for all the kind words guys. Definitely gives me the desire to keep plugging away on this thing. I ordered the ECE rear crossmember today so it will be ready to go whenever I get the bed off this thing (approx. a week?).

Tonight I got the steering linkage all together. Of course it still needs a good bit of adjustment, but at least it's together!

This weekend (if not sooner) I'll be rolling it out of the garage and getting measurements together for next weeks part ordering extravaganza!

Other pics: How the whole thing looks right now | Wiring harness from MDC (thanks!).

Re: The elves showed up - Finally met my Feb. goal!

Yesterday I was able to air up the front suspension and pull it out of the garage. Seems like I may have lucked out on plumbing the air lines, couldn't really locate a leak (other than one of the schrader valves I had on there). We'll see what it looks like this afternoon. Also got the swaybar on, but didn't get any pics of that. At any rate, here are some pics and a few videos

I still need to upload the pics...and here they are:
