to powder coat or not to powder coat.

hey all,
well, i'm painting my frame in a week or two but i was concidering powder coating some of the other parts. i am wondering what specificly i should concider powder coating and what i really don't need too. i know this sounds weird but here's my reasoning:

i'm painting the frame because i have shaved close to 200 holes and i need to put some filler on it to make it smooth and mirror like in apperance. however i know the spindles will likely rust if i paint them so powder coating is probably adviable there. ... beyond that what do you think?

oh i forgot. i posted this to the 67-72 board because it's a 71 and the answers i get will probably be more usable if they're catered to what i'm building. i hope you understand.

I would use POR on it all...esp looking at your location.

i here POR 15 is prone to fading and doesn't like non rusty surfaces though. what's your experince with it longhorn? also do you think it would adhear to DP40?

I would powder coat it, the power steering gears we make at work get powder coated, they go into heavy duty semi's and they last quite a few hundred thousand miles, besides powdercoat gets shiny after you cook it

I just did mine well a good bit of the parts and if I had to do it again....EVERTHING would get powder coated. Frame and all the undercariage parts.

Well, the over the road trucks I work on every day have the powder coat on them, and they are all flaking off and letting the rust build up underneath.
As for being non CV resistant, that is correct, but a quick coat of paint fixes that. And if you shoot the paint when the POR is still tackey, then there is no sanding needed, no primer needed, and it will pretty much never come off. It will be one wioth the POR.
As for sticking to non rusted items, 99% of the time I put parts in the sand blaster and then POR them, have yet to have a problem.
However, i wouldn't apply it over the primer you already have on there.

I have used por and so far its been great, I would look at that option before spending the money to powdercoat. I think you will like the results with por.

roj2323...longhorn man..is exactly right in my opinion.first off everything I have ever powder coated gets scratched sooner or later and then I end up doing a touch up with paint anyway because you cant touchup with powder coat. And any time you sand blast then paint you have got a perfect surface for paint. paint is the way to go but keep in mind that the thicker the paint the more likely it is to separate or peel. A lot of guys think that thicker is better but it just isnt the case. In the old days it was 20 coats of whatever and then later on it cracks and shrinks. Nowadays the pros use less coats with better results... OK I'll shut up now ..just my two cents ... but keep in mind I work on the ocean.. salt water..I used to prep and paint ships....
