Question on shocks for members running 4" rear drop

I've searched and read many of the posts about this topic.

I have a 71 C10 coil sprung rear...4" lowering springs.
Front I used 2.5" drop with spindles so I bought the KYB 5409 for the front.

Have seen opinions that a 4" drop is not enough to require shock relocators and lowering shocks....some that say it is....I saw in one post that 5409's can be used on the rear also.

The KYB 5416 is the matching rear stock shock, will these work without a relocator and 4" drop?
Is there another p/n that I can order that is shorter, and will work without a shock relocator bracket?
Or is the shock relocator the best overall solution???

Thanks in advance for the help
(moved this here from the suspension board).

Some people just run stock length fronts on the rear...

Re: Question on shocks for members running 4" rear drop

You don't need special length shocks for the front if your are just using drop spindles with stock heigth springs. The only things that moves location is the spindle, the shock is not changed. I had 4.5" in the rear, and I flipped the lower shock mounts and ran stock length shocks. No problems. I made new upper brackets for when it goes back together. It will have a 6" rear drop then.

Flipping the lower brackets is probably the quickest and cheapest way. I think at 4" you would probably be OK either way.

Re: Question on shocks for members running 4" rear drop

yes I bought the stock length shocks for the front and all is good.

my questions were concerning the rear w/ the 4" drop.

So flipping the brackets and swapping side for side will give me another inch or so if installed length then correct? I'm thinking the brackets won't sit flat against the trailing arm if upside down? You just make a spacer of some sort?
Sounds like an easy/free solution ( I like free)

The other alternative is running KYB 5409's in the rear...anyone doing this with a 4" drop that can confirm it works?

thanks much guys

Re: Question on shocks for members running 4" rear drop

It has been a couple of years since I did this, but if I remember right, I cut the lip off the side that was interfering with the trailing arm, and welded a new piece of flat bar on the other side that help stiffen it up (red arrow). I ran stock length shocks, and had a 4.5" drop (3" springs, 1.5" blocks).

Re: Question on shocks for members running 4" rear drop

Just flip the lower mount and put a spacer between it and the trailing arm. Mines been that way for years. And stock length shock!

Re: Question on shocks for members running 4" rear drop

No need for any flipping of anything. I am running the same setup 2.5" drop spindles in the front and 4" drop springs in the rear. I am using Doetsch drop shocks. I bought them from CPP, here is the part No. 4095GLL. When I was looking into lowering my truck eight years ago there were not nearlly as many venders as now. By the way the truck rides like a dream and handles well with these shocks. I hope this helps

But he likes free and easy...... mostly free. Shocks aren't free, flipping brackets is free. Leaves more $$$ for shiney LOL

Re: Question on shocks for members running 4" rear drop

I lowered one of my trucks 4" in the rear with coils and am running stock length shocks and it rides just fine.

Jefe and 70c10:
You running stock length rear shocks correct? Or stock length front shocks (like the 5409's)?

Thanks for the replies guys....

Re: Question on shocks for members running 4" rear drop

I'm running stock length all the way around. My front is lowered almost 3" by cutting the coils.
