Power Steering Gear!
Hello all,
I have removed my Power Steering Gear on my 70 GMC Longhorn and want to rebuid it. The guy at NAPA said they sell the kit and he would help me. I wanted to ask the Board members first if they had ever tried this and if there were any issues that I may expect while attempting this? I figured this would make a good FAQ when I was done. I currently did not find one in the FAQ search. Thanks to all whom reply. Respectfully

Re: Power Steering Gear!
disassemble it in an old box top or something simular just incase the ball bearings that are in there try to take off. it is very important that you not loose any of them.
sorry that's all the info i have on the subject. i just replace mine. it's less of a hassle. |

Re: Power Steering Gear!
I plan to go the local library and look at an older service manual to get a run down on this. Photo copy a couple of pages with pictures to do it up good.
Good luck - Bob

I looked into just rebuilding, & resealing mine about a year ago, but in finding out what is needed to rebuild it, & my limited tools & skills, I just decided to replace instead. later,

Re: Power Steering Gear!
I am in your corner. I always try to rebuild myself. That is most of the fun of rebuilding, otherwise it is replaceing. Google "Saginaw power steering rebuild" . There are at least two very detailed photo narations on the rebuild. Have fun. Watch your balls. Don't force anything and think! It is not difficult.

Re: Power Steering Gear!
Thanks JPERT. I will give this a shot with my new truck. I finally broke down and bought a replacement for the other truck, but still haven't installed it yet. I am out of college here in 3 1/2 weeks and will be hitting the GMC full blast. Thanks Again.
R/ Billy

Re: Power Steering Gear!
I plan to rebuild mine. I figure if I mess it up, I can replace it with a new one. The kits are not that expensive.
Here are a couple of links to articles on rebuilding the steering gear with great pictures. Four Wheeler Magazine - Saginaw Steering Box Rebuild Scribd - Saginaw Box Rebuild - How To
