Cool Ice68 59 Chevy Project

My Project
I'm doing a frame up restoration on '59 Chevy Truck 3100 Stepside. My dad bought the truck for me when I was a sophomore in High School. It was my first ride. It didn't have an engine, but the truck came with the original tranny. My dad put in a 305 engine. Fast forward years later, I decided to restore the truck since my dad has retired and we can spend some quality time together.
Right now, we removed the bed, cab, and front end to get to the frame.
We're using a wire brush/wheel to clean up the frame.
I 'll try to submit some pic's later.

Re: Ice68 59 Chevy Project

She looks like a great truck to start with. As for the lower front corners, LMC sell replacment pacth's for them. Each side take two seperate panels. Here's a picture mine after they were installed.

P.S. They also sell a pacth panel for your dash that's in need of a dentist.

That does look like a really good body to start out with! You aren't messing around either, nice quick progress man. It's nice to see another guy laying in the dirt doing a frame off! Welcome to "Ground" up resto club!!!!

Don't get discouraged by a little rust, she looks like a nice solid truck compaired to many others I have seen.

The previous owner hacked out the dash to put in a CB Radio. I missed my bid on buying a smooth dash to replace the missing tooth. I want to put in a CD player.

Thanks Jebb1978 for the comments.
My next question has to do with the frame. I ask this question on another thread, but I might get more response here. I bought the Dupont Nason Chassis Paint; my question is "Do I need to use epoxy primer on the frame before I use the Nason chassis paint? As far as I know, the frame has never been repainted. Thanks for the information.

Re: Ice68 59 Chevy Project

My next plan of action for the 59 Chevy Project:
Wishlist
1)Upgrade the frontend with Mustang IFS.
2)Upgrade the master cylinder with power booster.
3)Upgrade front brakes with disk brakes.
4)Lower the rear suspension by flipping the leaf springs.

Reality
1)Keep the original straight axle or go with the 3" dropped axle.
2)Upgrade the original master cylinder with a kit, but I not sure about always double pumping my brakes.
3)Replacing the brake shoes and getting the drums turned or replaced.
4)Painting the original leaf springs or go with monoleafs.

Thanks for the info.

I would recommend using a priemer first. Your frame looks like it was in very simular condition to mine (Love the old Southwest ). It appears to be solid, the only reason I have not used a priemer with the rustoleum is because it's purpose is to be used as a sealer. I found this http://www.performancecoatings.dupon...son/422-05.pdf on the Dupont site but it doesn't specifically say you need priemer or you don't. I say when in doubt use a sealer first, it does say you can use it on a priemed surface.

Good luck buddy! Can't wait to see the painted version.

Re: Ice68 59 Chevy Project

I just finished painting my 305 engine. Next target is the frame. I would like to put in IFS, but due to $$$ I will probably stayed with the original straight axle. I'm still looking into the drop axle. Has anyone had any experience with the drop axle?
Thanks,
Leroy

Cool Re: Ice68 59 Chevy Project

Hello Jebb,
I haven't painted the frame yet. I worked at a summer school for 5 weeks, and tomorrow is my last day. I want to either put a IFS or dropped straight axle on it . I need to buff off the "rain rust" before it get painted. I'm almost finish with painting the engine, and I just finish painting the headers. I'll try to keep you posted.
Thanks,
Leroy
