I Need Seat Help

I need some input on different seats that I can use in my 70 and 71.

Heres my dilema, I really don't have the money to switch my tanks to the back of my trucks yet. I am looking for different seat ideas that can give you a little more leg room, with the tank still behind the seat. Oh ya! I have a little extra table muscle too! So more room would help. Any help would really be appreciated.

When I found my GMC someone had big giant bucket seats in it, like out of a Lincoln Continental or something, only ragged. I had like 1/2" between me and the steering wheel and my legs were jambed up in the dash. I had to find an alternative fast and cheap. Don't laugh too hard now, I gave 20 bucks for the buckets out of a little late model pontiac car.

They are pretty comfortable, they have four legs that sit flat, like the floor in the truck is, and two of the four bolt holes line with the original holes in the floor. I didn't drill the other holes out because the seats are a temp solution. I plan to go with an original bench seat or maybe a 60/40 split bench out of a later model eventually. But these serve the purpose for now. My biggest complaint with them right now is they sit a bit too low.

I've seen guys on here with both bench and bucket seats out of late model trucks of about every make. And I THINK the middle row seat of late model burbs has been used as well.

Yes, I have been kicking around the same question, I need new seats as well. I have seen some very unique ideas on this board. I don't know for sure if they all fit with the gas tank still in the cab, but try doing a search there is actually a lot of info on here. Good luck, and if you find a perfect solution please share it with the rest of us, along with some pics.

Normally the seat hits the cab before the gas tank, removing the tank isn't going to make more legroom. Some of the 90's gm seats have thinner backs which will help with legroom.

I've had Hyundai seats in mine for awhile and they're very comfortable. I'm taking them out ONLY because I need to have some mounts properly fabricated for them and don't have the skills, equipment or the money to have someone fab up mounts. They're for sale if anyone is interested in them.

another mod to do for the belly crowd is to collapse the intermediate steering shaft and slide the steering column foward a couple inches

I have a set of Nissan maxima(99) seats that I had covered to match the cloth I covered the door panels, dash cover, and sun visors in.

I fabbed up mounts for them, they fit quite well, and the seat was about 1" lower and 1" further back from the wheel.

With that being said, I took them out and put my bench seat back in. It's also got brand new leather, and I love the bench.

Right now the nissan seats are sitting in a closet waiting for me to do something with 'em....

There are several schools of thought here and I have tried them all!!!!!!

Small foreign bucket seats and fabing brackets on the floor
Chevy buckets..OE or late model
Changing around the steering config. as mentioned above.
Altering factory seats

I am a large person also......GUTS RULE!!!!!! and the modifications that I have had the most luck with are as follows.

Shorten steering column and a smaller "Rally" type steering wheel
Tilt wheel and "Rally" steering wheel
My last science project was VERY CHEAP!!!!!!!..FREE
First.......take the back of the bench seat off...you will have to un-do
some of the seat upholstery.
Second... remove the seat tracks from the bottom of the seat..
Third..... weld tabs on the top of the seat tracks to allow you to use
the factory mounting holes in the floor but actually moving
the seat back about 2 inches when mounting it back on the
seat tracks. Re-mount seat bottom to tracks 2" back
Fourth.....re-mount the back of the seat on to the bottom....BUT....
slide it forward about 2-4 inches using the front hole as
the back hole and re-drilling a new front hole in the seat
bottom frame...you might need to do some tab welding
here for strength.

What you have done is slid the seat bottom back and brought the seat back forward....it gives you a lot more room and all you have lost is 2 or so inches under your bottom....you can also do a little recline action at the same time.

It worked great for me.....I also did a tilt column and rally steering wheel. PLENTY OF ROOM

OR....we could all push away from the table and go back to the gym??????

I think by far the best seat you'll find to replace your stock bench is a bench from the 88-94 model Full sized GM pickups. Very comfortable and almost a bolt in. Like others have said, tank in or out will not give you more leg room because the seats hit the cab first. Thes seats have thinner, yet more supportive backs.

I like the seat variations of the 88 to early 90's years (full bench, 60/40 split bench, buckets). Also, buckets from Hondas and smaller cars can have brackets easily fabed to fit nicley.
