bed off....Pics!

I got ambitious with all the tools sitting here to yank the bed, so I got after it and here it is. Threw a chain in the rafters attached a 2 ton "come along" to the rafters and put four motorcycle tie downs from the four stake pockets. Got them as tight as I could and hooked the come along to the center and started cranking. Rolled the truck out from under and set the bed back down on six tires. It worked without any mishap whatsoever. On to installing the fuel cell. In the last pic you can get an idea of the rake of the suspension, I'm digging it!

Re: bed off....Pics!

Congrats. Progress is fun! I used a backhoe to pull the bed off my son's truck. What are your plans for the fuel filler? I just got a blazer door and filler from Jose to do the sidemarker fill door. Good luck and great pics. Al

Re: bed off....Pics!

Haven't fully decided on the fill location. I have a Fuelcellguy 18 gallon aluminum tank that will go in, in the next couple of days after the frame is oven cleaner soaked, blasted, cleaned and painted. I don't think I am going to do the sidemarker fill door...something a lil' diff.

Re: bed off....Pics!

Thanks Guys! Am I doing this resto ASS Backwards or what ??? Cleaning up the frame after the truck has been painted ??? Why the flock did I not do the frame when I was painting the truck ??? What happened was... I was doing a resto on my 72' K-10 which was my daily driver, so I needed a second truck to drive while doing the resto on the K-10. I found this lil' 71' C-10 down in Colorado Springs which was very clean and driveable. It was all extremely straight but was in primer so I took it to get painted. The painter tells me this 71' is too nice and straight to do a crap paint job, and convinces me to let him take it apart for paint some really nice paint. I agree. So he took the entire truck apart and did an awesome paint job on this lil' 71' that was supposed to be my "driver" while I did the K-10 resto. So I get the 71' C-10 back from the painter 9 months after I took it to him, but he flaked and didn't put it all back together. My wife said "Pick one truck and do the one truck right". Since the paint was so awesome I decided to keep the 71' C-10 and put it back together the best I could. So.....this is why it seems that I am doing this truck ASS Backwards. Oh well. I haven't told the wife yet that I need to order one of those ZZ383 motors yet for this Lil' Red truck, LOL!

Here she is when I bought her:

Re: bed off....Pics!

Today I got the truck 180'ed and ground & punched the rivets of the two rear cross braces where the fuel tank will go. She is now sitting with 3 cans of oven cleaner a soakin'. 18 gallon Fuelcellguy tank to be fitted after clean and paint.

Gots to go to "real" work now...hasta!!! Don't look at the Mopar flags....that was when I owned a Prowler...sold the Prowler for one of these trucks!!!

Re: bed off....Pics!

Ok , 3 cans of oven cleaner have been soaking for 24 hrs or so. Got out my 2200 lbs pressure washer and started blasting. Going to do one more oven cleaner soak tonight and blast again tomorrow. The freak in me cannot just paint it together, I'm going to take it apart and change the trailering arms bushing and do it right. The little spots are rain drops. It started to rain after I had blasted it and it wa drying.

Re: bed off....Pics!

hmm i just learned the trailing arm crossmember is under the cab on a shortbed. on my longbed it was at the back of the cab, easily accessible with the bed off. it made changing the bushings much easier.

Re: bed off....Pics!

i used energy suspension polyurethane from lmc truck. the hardest part of installing them was removing the original rubber ones. we used a torch and burned out the old ones.

Re: bed off....Pics!

Well got to taking the trailering arms off, rust and bushing removal. Going to take everything apart, paint it all up and put er' back together. Poly Trailering bushing were ordered today. Like I read in the previous post, I had to take a torch to the old rubber bushing and melted them out! Great idea!!!

looking totally sweet.

I know I'm not one to correct anyone's spelling/grammer/word useage... but I have to;
Tehy are trailing arms... not trailering.

Re: bed off....Pics!

Thanks again guys. Trailering arm seam that runs down the entire middle appears to be where all the dirt, grime, and water can collect so I filled it with paintedable 35 acylic latex caulk. They always told me if ya find a crack, fill it with caulk...LOL! In all seriousness, the caulk should keep the water and grime from getting between the trailering arm.
