Sold truck :) Broke down on new owner :(

I sold my 70 GMC that I have been using faithfully for 2 years. Once I got the brakes and front end fixed up it never gave me any trouble at all. The new owner loads his HD Roadking in the back and sets out on the 88 mile journey back home, and apparently it has broken down. Just got home and saw a note. I feel really bad about this, as I was honest when I said it had given me no trouble. Now the thing is crapped out somewhere. I can't believe the bad luck, for both of us.

Was it a serious break down or something quick? Not that it matters... just curious.

Re: Sold truck :) Broke down on new owner :(

That is such a bummer for both of you! I just sold a truck that I have had since new in 1989 to a kid how has been begging me to sell it to him for 4 years. I would feel terrible if it broke down on him.

I haven't talked to him yet, so I don't know what the problem is. Hopefully nothing too bad.

Re: Sold truck :) Broke down on new owner :(

I know how you feel Heavy D, but if you sold it in good faith you shouldn't feel bad. You sold a 36 year old truck and the new owner should realize that is what it is, a 36 year old truck.. Did he pay your asking price or chisel you down some? I've bought and sold lots of vehicles over the years sleep well at night knowing I sold in good faith. Was that an extra truck or are you getting another?

By the way legally in Saskatchewan the buyer has no recourse to you,, but if lets say the engine blew up and the buyer was pi**ed enough he could take you to small claims court..

Re: Sold truck :) Broke down on new owner :(

I dont know about you but when I get a new toy I tend to beat on it a bit because its new to me. He may have just broke it having some fun. You have to remember that when you buy a 40 year old truck that you have to understand that anything could go wrong. A guy that bought a 63 3/4 ton longbed from me wanted me to guarentee that the truck would make it from Portland to Seattle Wa. I didn't, He never called me so he must have made it. But I personally wouldn't ever ask someone to guarentee a 40 year old truck. Sorry to hear about the bad luck though.

So you are saying if the engine is toast he can come after me in small claims? This is the only time I have ever just used the sale paper attached to the registration to sell a vehicle. I always make a paper bill of sale with "sold as is" on it, but we were just trying to get him on his way home The truck sold for $1700, not alot of $$ but you never know how mad he is. I have bought alot of stuff that blew up right away but it is expected when dealing with unreastored beaters. People these days seem to be different, and I wil not be surprised if this sale causes all sorts of problems. Oh btw I want a swb truck and just decided that it was best to let this one go since the price to convert mine was just getting too high. Have a line on a swb here so we will see how it goes.

Hi Dalton..For future reference, never us the words "as is" on a Bill of Sale always use "Sold in present condition ".. Is the SWB close to you in PA?

I found an 87 SWB Silverado loaded with options and has 245 kms a couple of summers ago that is still with the original owner ( an old guy, even older than me) and have been trying to buy that from him. I figure it will make a great daily driver once my Pink & White is done and I dont want to use it daily in the summer as I do now especially when I get my oak floor and stainless stringers done..

Re: Sold truck :) Broke down on new owner :(

Sounds like when I sold my '83 Ski Nautique a few years ago. I brought it out to the guys lakehouse so he could water-test it. Everything worked great, and the boat never gave me a problem. Well, 2 weeks later I get a call from him saying he blew the engine. I was like "I'm really sorry to hear that man, but the darn thing is 20 years old, you can't really be pissed at me". Luckily he wasn't, just wanted to let me know what happened. I felt bad for about 5 minutes though. Good thing he wasn't mad at me, he was one of my customers I dealt with all the time!

Re: Sold truck :) Broke down on new owner :(

I have bought two vehicles recently that were over 300 miles away from my house. The first was my truck, and the second was my 80 malibu.....neither have perfect engines.....and I wouldn't have held it against the previous owners had something gone wrong, I would have just been kinda screwed with the remaining miles to home.......but those are the chances you take when you buy old vehicles and don't show up with a flatbed trailer in tow. (maybe he blew out the springs......but that is a brilliant way to pick up a truck!)

Don't know how the laws are at your place. Around here, they can only hold a dealer liable. For safety's sake, write either as is where is or caveat emptor (buyer beware) on the bill of sale.

Re: Sold truck :) Broke down on new owner :(

I know that road, 30 minutes after I got my truck the thing spun the balancer and pulley off, needed a new crankshaft. I was 16 at the time so my dad handled the situation and I know he wasn't happy with the guy we bought it from but he offered to pay our tow bill so that was a little consolation. It was about that time that I realized my parents weren't car people as they really didn't understand that those kinda things happen with 40 year old vehicles, just some bad luck for us.
