Aluminum Fuel Tank

Had a few people asking about dims of tank and finally got around to measuring. I haven't actually put the bed on yet to see how everything lines up, but I've sure measured about a 100 times and the bed cross brace should fit right into the tank relief. The tank should hang just about right in line with the factory rear bumper and by increasing the tank height and having the relief, you pick up almost 4.5 gallons. Capacity is 23.8 gallons. you could pick up some more without the chamfers, but they give you a little more room for exhaust routing.

Re: Aluminum Fuel Tank

That's a great looking tank! It looks like the top of the tank is going to be right below the bed floor! How much space will there be between the top of the fittings and the bed floor? Will you be putting another cross member behind it or is the hitch going to act as one? Your truck color looks almost exactly like mine. Hope to have her rollin by august!

Re: Aluminum Fuel Tank

Nice tank!
I'm also interested in the clearance there.

You could run the ECE rear frame brace like I put on my '67 project

Joe, is your FCG fuel cell flange mount? If so, could you take some pics of how you mounted it? Thanks!

These are what I took during mock up, let me know if you would like more specific pics.

My tank mounts from the bottom (of course to make service easier once the truck is assembled) I ended up using a strip of rubber between the tank and the frame to reduce squeaking. Also, I have a strip of aluminum on the top side of the framerail to help secure everything.

yes, that rusty spot was cleaned up and painted prior to assembly

Re: Aluminum Fuel Tank

Thanks Joe! If possible could you take a pic of the underneath (where it's bolted to the frame)? I'm going to be mocking mine up in a week or so and just want to get ideas together before I get there. I really appreciate it!

Re: Aluminum Fuel Tank

This looks awesome and something I want to do waaaaay down the road once other priorities are done.

I notice that you're mounting this directly to the frame rails as do many others. I've always been worried about frame flex having a negative effect on the tanks. Are you concerned at all about that-just curious?

Re: Aluminum Fuel Tank

I'm not sure there's enough frame flex this far back on the frame to cause much of a problem... but thats just a guess. I've never seen anybody mention it before, so it will be interesting to see what others think.

Re: Aluminum Fuel Tank

SactoJim - Is that tank baffled at all? And what is used for a pick-up? Does it have a screen on it?

I still love that color!!!!!

The rear frames are braced pretty well with the brace that goes over the shocks as well as having the rear brace in place. I don't imagine there is enough flex to do any harm.

Anyone else?

Re: Aluminum Fuel Tank

The receiver hitch is plenty stiff enough to keep the frame rails from "moving around" and ad protection in case I ever got hit....wouldn't that suck after all this work, think I'd rather be blown up then see the aftermath of my truck being trashed!!!

The clearance is minimal between the fittings and bottom of the bed. The tank is baffled and the pickup is in the rear corner with no screen. I have an inline filter before the pump and then one at the carb. There is also one vent line and one fuel return line since I'm running a regulator that has a return.

Initially I wanted to put the tank mounting flanges on top of the bottom frame flange (like Joe67), but clearance was getting tight, so I opted for the bottom with some rubber cushioning. The added benefit of this is that if I ever have any probs with the tank, I can just drop it down and not have to lift the bed.

Thanks to all for the compliments!

Re: Aluminum Fuel Tank

Fuelcellguy I believe is his ID. Haven't seen him on here lately and seems I checked his website a few weeks back and it wasn't there. Maybe someone on here know how to get a hold of him.

Been almost 2 years already since I got it and If I remember, it was about $420 shipped to my door.

I am still around. I took the website down for a while for a break while we were moving into the new shop addition. I will also get around to revamping the site as well adding more pics and info. Like I said, I am still here and not planning on going anywhere soon. Later, Mark

Alvin - let me know if these pics are what you are looking for
Mark included mouting plates. I replaced the lower plates with aluminum and added a rubber 'gasket' to help with squeaking
