Rearend out what to do?

The rear is out on my '68 3/4. Violently shakes the truck and making noise. It has coil rear so I think its going to be hard to find a replacement. Will a half ton fit the mounts? Gary in okc

Re: Rearend out what to do?

Im in oklahoma city. I just need it drivable again so my wife dosnt try to bury it. Rear is sort of visable here. I got wacked, parked, by a garbage truck in that corner in december and I think the high miles and four foot skid might have done it in

Re: Rearend out what to do?

I'll assume the garbage truck ppl gave you some compensation... I'd call there insurance comapany and point out the rear is locking up now.
You have the Dana rear in there. If that's a big block truck, (dana is very common in big block trucks) then you'll play hell getting another one with the same gearing that'll bolt right in. However, a 3/4 ton rear shouldn't be hard to locate.

You're best bet may be, paying the $25 fee and subscribing to the board, and then posting a wanted to buy thread in the parts pages. There's enough members within 100 miles of you, I think you'll find what you need fairly quick. I know you are new, and may not know how good this place is when you are in a pinch, but you won't get a larger audiance looking for a rear end anywhere els but here. The other boards are good and all (some of them anyways) but the numbers are here.

Thats a shame, the bed looked fairly rust free on the bottoms. Just like a timex. Takes a lickin, and keeps on tickin! Wish ya luck finding parts. You couldnt have found a better board, or got a reply from a better person who knows what they are talkin about!

Re: Rearend out what to do?

Best solution is to replace the rear end. Measure the distance between the wheel mounting faces on the drums and go to the junkyard. You should be able to find a 14 bolt full floater and weld your mounts on it. Don't know what gears you have now, but 3.73s are usually an easy score.

It does appear that you have a 12 bolt Dana. Sad to see one of them go out.

Re: Rearend out what to do?

I replaced the ujoint forward of the pinion. It was way bad. I jacked it up and ran it in gear and it sounded like the rear was pretty noisy. Its definatly rough when you roll it through by hand. I may still pull the rear shaft and listen to the carrier. Plus Ive jumped on it pretty hard and no ujoints broke

Re: Rearend out what to do?

Thanks Fred. The rear isnt going anywhere. I still have the 396 that was in it too (454 now). Ive considered the mount remount. I figure getting the differential looked at down the road is more realistic if the truck isnt waiting for it

Pull the inspection cover and see what it looks like inside. If your not sure, post pics and we can give you an insight on what wrong.

Re: Rearend out what to do?

Stock factory gearing behind the 396 would have been a 3.54 and the Dana 60 just like you have there(10 bolt cover by the way). Any other gear ratio was special order. If you were closer I would have what you need out in the shed, but you would have to put up with the PowerLoc differential.

Re: Rearend out what to do?

I'd start by yanking thing apart, maybe you just have a busted spider gear,or something that can be fixed fairly cheap.
Also just about any chevy rear will prolly fit, just the brakes, and drums will be different,so don't narrow your search to just the 5 years.I swapped a 3rd member from a 79 into a 72 1/2,and it fit no problem, both 14 bolts, same thing inside. So I would guess the same is true with the 3/4 tons.

Re: Rearend out what to do?

A mechanic at a carlot I worked at claimed it to be 4:10 posi after changing an axle seal once. Im second owner btw. It was literally a farmer I knew. Manual everything bigblock. Its low geared enough that I almost cant drive it on the highway.

But the cool part is that a buddy just called and thinks he has one for partial trade on a vibratory shaker partswasher I have that we've been trying to get a deal going on. I love this truck and driven it daily since '93. And you know I love my truck because my backup

Re: Rearend out what to do?

Hey, I did some more checking on this truck today and pulled the rear driveshaft. When I turned the front driveshaft through by hand the front ujont fealt fairly rough. But the pinion on the rear fealt real rough. Is it possible I just have a munched pinion bearing making it shake? It had a wasted u-joint in front of it a long time. Also, I checked and the rear is full of oil. Truck has 275,000 known miles btw( I'm second owner). I also lit both back tires two feet forward and reverse after it warmed up, so it seems like the gears must still be good
