Lets talk hub caps...3/4 ton and one ton
About 2 or 3 years ago, someone on here found an NOS 1969 hubcap still in the box, and was startled to discover it was gray, and not white nor stainless.
Does anyone know who this was? Did anyone save the photo? I have 3 of these. I remember they are 69 only items. However, I noticed something really wierd... they aren't as tall as the white caps nor the stainless ones. Has anyone discovered odd looking ORIGINAL wheels that would hold the hubcap further out? I don't see how these would clear the axle in the back. |

Re: Lets talk hub caps...3/4 ton and one ton
I only know about '67 and '68 caps...LOL! I have identified 5 different hub caps for the '68 trucks and that does not include full wheel covers!

Re: Lets talk hub caps...3/4 ton and one ton
Well, here is a pic of my one decent looking gray one.. and yes, decent is kinda graded on a curve, it is \pretty beat up.
Notice the height of the center dome. When I was cleaning these up, I noticed the dome height, and that's when i realized that these 2 white ones (obviously painted by some inbred hillbilly) were actually gray ones. I studied the chips on them, and they are in fact gray underneath. |

Re: Lets talk hub caps...3/4 ton and one ton
I've never seen caps like those before. I have five of the white ones, four came from a 69 and the other from a 70 and none of 'em are short like that. The old 16x6" split rims from my truck have only three knubs in a triangle pattern on the wheel to hold the caps on and it looks like it might make the hubcap stick out more to clear the axle hub on the rear. I had two of those wheels on the rear of the truck with '76-'85 hubcaps for awhile and now that I think about it, those did kind of stick out more than the fronts which were solid 16x6.5 GM wheels, even though it just had the aluminum dogdish caps on there.

Re: Lets talk hub caps...3/4 ton and one ton
Just a guess: The taller ones are for trucks with Dana 60 rear axles, the short ones are for G.M. rear axles? The hub sticks out farther on the Dana 60. Some time ago, we had a similar discussion on the centers being concave or convex. I went through my old hubcaps, and it seems that the '69 caps are convex, and the '73 caps I have are concave. Also, the '69 caps have painted centers, and the '73 caps do not (all mine are stainless).

Re: Lets talk hub caps...3/4 ton and one ton
I'm pretty sure that the whole concave center of the hub cap thing is bogus. I've looked at a ton of old adds, factory photos... and never saw a single convex one.
Those stainless ones came on trucks with corp (eaton) axles, so that theory is out the window. I have yet to actually install an original 16.5 rim (I have one as a spare, maybe I'll do it tomorow night at the shop) but I just can't see it clearing. All these caps were sitting on the floorboard of the longhorn when i got it. Randy (oldchev4X4) had nabbed them at a swap meet or something. I had thought the white ones were normal white ones, and the gray one was a custom job from a previouse owner. I never gave it much though, just flipped them upside down and used them as nut and bolt holders. Then a few years ago, some one on here posted a NOS score, and some one else had the info saying it was from an early 69. When I saw that, i threw it in a box and it disapeared for a while, and I finally found it the other day. |

Re: Lets talk hub caps...3/4 ton and one ton
Andy here is a 16.5 cap from my truck. Dad ran them for awhile but with the 9.50x16.5 bias tire were so stiff they kept flying off every pothole so he took them off for good. He lost 1 from 1 pothole so I only have 3 now.
I have the H072 axle which sticks out further than the dana 60 and they fit. Stock 16.5x6.75 rim.

Re: Lets talk hub caps...3/4 ton and one ton
yeah It looks like my dealer parts book shows them as "side mount spare deluxe cover" this book is dated 09/68 for 69 model year light/medium duty trucks.

Re: Lets talk hub caps...3/4 ton and one ton
Andy,
I have been trying to say there is a difference in these and the reagular ones. I have two of these and they are stainless. I put them on my 16.5 rims on the back and they do not fit. They onlt fit the front. Take care Andy,
