8/400 fender emblem on 71 - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

My neighbor drug his 71 Cheyenne home yesterday so it would be closer to work on.
We got to looking and debating about the fender emblems. His glove box sticker says 396 cid so the 400 on the fender must refer to the transmission?

400 is the engine size. Chev badged the 71-72 (and 70 I think..) models "400", even though the engines were a 402. IIRC only 69 trucks used the "396" fender emblems.

In 1970 they switched from the 396 to a 402. Some 71 trucks list the "396" engine still, although it was a 402. The fender emblem on 70-72 trucks lists the big block as 8-400. Your friends truck is correct.
