What's the correct tire size for a 72 C20 Camper Special?

My Dad's truck has 16" tires on it that look waaaaaay to big on the truck. There is nothing on the glove box sticker that says tire size. Anyone know what size tire/wheel should be on this truck? It is a 72 C20 Camper Special, 402/400. LWB.

TIA!

My best guess for back then would be 7.50x16, but that may not be right. I'd put 235/85/r16's on it. They are tall and skinny like the originals.

I agree ^^. My K20 originally had 7.50-16s on split rims. Should be close to 32" tall.

Re: What's the correct tire size for a 72 C20 Camper Special?

well, if it is a camper special, then it's a ford.
In 72, the custom camper on a C/20 you'd get either 7.50 on 16 inch split rims, or 8.50 on a 16.5 inch rim, and I've never seen the SPID label say anything about wheels between split or one piece, and never seen an option code in the books. So in reality, if there's no build sheet, then it's an either or thing up to you. I had 9.50 on 16.5's on my old blue longhorn, and it looked just right IMO.

Thaanks for setting me straight Andy!! I think it actually looks pretty good, but Dad thinks they are too tall. Just a matter of opinion I guess.

are those 9.50's? They look considerably larger than what I had. I guess just like with moden tires... it all depends on who measured the tooling.

I know you can't see the tires too well, but I didn't get many pictures of this truck before it got bent.

And yes, I do still get misty when i think of her.

Yep, my truck had 7.5-16's on split rims and so did my Suburban. The front tires on the truck were what looked like the original Goodyear super hi-milers, and the rear tires on it and all four extras that came with the Suburban looked like this one:

Finally, I was actually somewhat right about something!

Andy, I hate those pics. A real nice truck ruined.

the truck wasn't as nice as the pics lead you to believe.. but none the less... it was in pretty decent shape, and a well optioned truck.

That's what my 72 C/20 has on it.

Re: What's the correct tire size for a 72 C20 Camper Special?

Not trying to hi-jack the thread but ...
oh oh did I hear someone mention Goodyear Custom Xtra Grip Hi-Milers! ? Is there another fan out there for these?

Here is a pic of it. They may be still available if you call the Goodyear dealer, if nothing else, maybe some of our Arizona friends can run accross the border to Mexico and them from here: http://www.goodyear.cl/tirecatalog/CXGSize.html

If only you could still get them in 9.50x16.5. Multi-Mile use to have a very close and similar tire that may still be in their warehouses....

Re: What's the correct tire size for a 72 C20 Camper Special?

roger, yep I'm a fan of 'em! My truck had those on the back, and they still have a lot of meat left on 'em. The ones from the K20 'Burb are halfway worn. That tire I posted is a 7.5-16 Cooper Courser-Traction LT, last time I checked they were around 100 bucks. It'd be cool to get some more of those Goodyear tires though.
