Glock and HuggerCST's official "Project 68" build thread
I thought I had better just start one thread and continue it instead of making a new one here and there when something got done. So, here it is. I will update this one as any progress is made.
So, to start the progress report, I got the engine and trans set in place last night. It is just temporary though, as I forgot to get flexplate bolts! I mainly wanted to get them in so I could start building the exhaust system. I need to bolt up the starter, trans cooler lines, and anything else that could get in the way so I can build around them. I am thinking that I might use a Lokar shifter cable linkage setup, that will let me run the exhaust completely above the bottom of the frame. That's all for now. I might put the bed together so I can set it on the frame to build the back part of the system. Oh yeah, that Flexfan is going away!! Have a factory fan to replace it with.

Ya know, it's kinda funny...... I've had the rolling chassis basically done for over a year and a half now, and it's been sitting in my other garage under a tarp. Then, one day, I get my shop cleaned out and think "I have room to move the chassis up here now", and I've had a full head of steam ever since!! I don't want to get ahead of myself here, but if I can keep the momentum up.......

I am keeping them. I'm going to smooth out the casting marks and grind off the bumps, then they are getting ceramic coated.

I know, don't remind me!! I know eventually I will have to get back on the cab, and the way things are going on the frame right now, that may be sooner than later! Oh well, at least at that point I will know I have to get the cab finished if I ever want to drive this thing again.
But, I think things will progress very quickly once the cab is done. Once that is done, it's just a matter of fit, adjust, paint, and reassemble.

Cool Joe! Here's some more pics for ya then!
Last night I mocked up the exhaust on the drivers side. I had to redo it a couple of times where it runs over the axle, but I think I have it where I want it now. From there it runs outside the frame since I will have a gas tank in the rear. My wife and I both jumped up and down on the back of the frame and it never touched the axle (the shocks are not on right now either). The thing I like about it is that there will only be a couple of bends in the system. And, there is absolutely nothing visable under the frame. I like it!! I also decided to use Lokars cable shifter linkage to gain some clearance, so I could then run the pipe right through the area where all the linkage stuff was. I am using 2-1/2" aluminized pipe along with welded mufflers from Summit. My buddy has them on his Mustang and I really like the sound of them, real throaty, and kind of like a Flowmaster but without the hollow/echo/cackly sound of the FLowmaster. Hmm, guess it sounds nothing like a Flowmaster then, huh? LOL! I am debating now whether to do the passenger side, or weld up the drivers side. I think I will do the passenger side next, and try to make it as exact as possible to the drivers side, then weld everything up. Truck porn:

I like that exhaust setup. I think I need to put holes in my crossmember for sure now.
Are you going to have any clearance issues with your exhaust running over the rear axle like that? |

It's not as close as the pics make it look. I don't have the rear shocks on yet, just the coil springs, so the wife and I jumped up and down on the rear of the frame and we could not get it to hit the axle. If I ever decide to go lower, I may run into clearance issues then. But, if I hit enought holes and bumps, it may just 'correct' itself!

Hmmmm, anyone see a problem with the exhaust in this pic?
It just jumped out at me this morning as I was loading my TIG welder cylinder.... I ran the tube right square under where the upper shock mount needs to go!! OOPS!!!! Bummer, I guess I need to install the upper brackets and the shocks, then order a couple more u-bends and route it around it. Didn't do anything last night except for fall asleep on the couch at about 8:30!

OK, got the exhaust fixed. The front stayed the same from the manifold to the trailing arm crossmember. The rear is basically the same setup, but routed differently. This time, I mounted the upper shock bracket and shock before tacking pieces in place (what a concept!). I was able to use all of the pieces from the first try, and only had to make one new one.
I have already fully welded it except for one joint right behind the crossmember. I need to pull it out, finish bending and welding the hangers, then I will be painting the systen with aluminum high temp paint on the inside, and flat black where it runs outside the frame in the rear. Turning past the panhard bar mount on the outside of the frame From inside the frame, running over the axle The extra hole on the hanger will be cut off, and the round bar will be heated and bent around the pipe and tacked in a few places. I have three of these on each side

Looks great , glad to see you workin on it again.!
One note on the muffler placement , I have them in the same place on my 64 , It creates alot of heat in the cab., and mine resonates like crazy ( flowmasters , you should need to worry about it) Im in the process of moving them back to right onfront of the diff . you might wanna thin about a heat sheild,
